The "missing" iPhone ringtone

We've all seen the iPhone ads. As my wife says, "I get it! The iPhone is for sale! I GET IT!"

Like I said, we've all seen them.

None are identical, but most have something in common. Namely, that peculiar ringtone. We call it peculiar because it isn't actually included with the iPhone. Luckily, most of us have it installed on our computers already.

As LifeClever points out, those with iLife '08 installed can find the ringtone in
  • /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects/Work - Home/Cell Phone Ringing.aif.
Converting it to a ringtone is simple. First, drag a copy to your desktop. Launch GarageBand and import the clip. Next, click the Cycle Region button and drag the yellow indicator to the end of the clip.

Finally, select "Send ringtone to iTunes" from the "Share" menu and you're all set. If that seems like too much work for you, just download the file as a ringtone here. Incidentally, there are a lot more sound files in Loops directories that would make good ringtones as well.

okay, i need some clarification on what i am doing wrong. i would greatly appreciate any advice. this is the situation:
-i have a 1st gen iphone [1.1.1] synced with my macbook (intel) itunes [7.6.2]
-i run through the process of finding the ringtone (1st one i chose to experiment with was 'telephone busy signal').
-i made a copy of it on my desktop
-imported it to garageband (i did the cycle through region-mAKING the yellow line cover all audio content)
-then i went to 'share' and exported to itunes [version 7.6.2] (it made me select -playlist, album name, composer etc & i tried it with aac compression and without)
-when it goes to itunes it is in 'music', NOT 'ringtones'
-i can get it onto the iphone only by exporting it as music on a playlist, but no NEW ringtone appears in either the 'ringtones' section of the settings.
-it never appears as a ringtone option in either itunes nor my iphone.
~could someone please, PLEASSSSSE help me

Hi, maybe you would lik this one better, i did it myself and added a nice fade in so that you can use the vibrate function.

That's an overly complicated way of doing your ringtones, garageband isn't needed at all.

(This little tutorial is for ANY sound file, not just for the ringtone mentioned in this article, although that will work)
All you have to do is put the sound file in iTunes and select it>get info>options and then you can select the start//stop times for your ringtone (this usually means screwing around with the song and the start time until you like it)

then press okay and right click the song again, this time click
"Convert selection to AAC" (If this is not an option then you need to change the import method in iTunes>preferences>advanced>importing and then change "import using" to AAC converter)

it will then create a 30-second-ish (30 is usually good for the ringtone, any longer will cause it to not work sometimes) AAC file in iTunes.

Drag the song to your desktop and change the file extension from "m4a" to "m4r" and when it asks you, choose "use m4r"

**THEN DELETE the original m4a file in iTunes (its not even there anyway) and drag the m4r file into the left hand column (movies music etc) and it will automatically sync them through iTunes.

=D

...because ^this^ method is not complicated at all ;)

GarageBand is really the simplest way to go about this. But there are more than two ways to skin a chicken.

okay, i got further with your method but there is still a problem. i made my own ringtone, changed the format, exported/imported the right way, and i got it to show up in the itunes 'ringtones' folder. but when i try to sync it with my iphone, it will not transfer. any ideas?

Garageband works fine, but i get my stuff from nakko.com works even better, I make my own ringtones, or just get from the truckloads they offer for free. the autosynch with iphone is super easy and really cool.
thanks for the tip anyway;)

I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to customize the VoiceMail, Text, Email, etc. alerts with some of the iLife Sound Effects. Is there a hack for that, or a simple program like MakeiPhoneRingTone that does this?

Nope, close but no cigar! Anyone know the ad agency who did this? There HAS to be one of the creative types out there who has made this into a ringtone for their own iphone.

The one in the commercial is a half step higher, and the notes are not spaced a third apart, but is a single note.

This was posted on August of LAST YEAR here:

At the bottom of the post you can download the ringtone directly if you don't want to convert it yourself. It's also been amplified.

Yes, I've been using the iLife/Apple-supplied sound FX for all my ringtones (as I don't like musical ones at all) There are some excellent "techy" sounding ones that I think fit the iPhone nicely. :)

The only concession was that my girlfriend "insisted" that I use the "24" ringtone for her calls! :)

Yea, it's not the same ring tone. If someone want to modify this one to sound like the one from the commercial, or just take the sound clip from the commercial and edit out the music that would be good too ;)

I've got the "24" sound, too. It really turns heads. I'd like to have a random "playlist" of my favorite ringers so that I'm always surprised by the ring, if it's not an assigned tone.
