AT&T lists WiFi hotspot access as part of iPhone plans

It looks like the reports of AT&T offering free Wi-Fi at their hotspots were not unfounded. Above you can see a new 'Included Feature' that AT&T is bundling with all their iPhone plans. Along with long distance calling, visual voicemail, call forwarding, 3-way calling and Caller ID you now get 'Access to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots.' Not too shabby at all.

Update: And like that it is gone! AT&T really needs to get their story straight on this one.

Where did you find "Access to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots" on the AT&T page? I could not find it anywhere.

On the "Plans" page the section of that page that you included in your post no longer includes that statement.

You know, they are trying to make this way to easy or hard, not sure which. Here is what I propose, send iPhone user an email, or SMS that says you now can have free WiFi, all you need to do is set up an account. You go to a page, your phone number "xxx-xxx-xxxx" is your Username, and you set up a password. Honestly. Then just make all "number based" logins only work on "mobile safari" If they are trying to keep it to where only people with iPhones can access it, they will never achieve that.

It almost feels like they want to release this, but they don't want it publicized.

I was able to log on at Starbucks in Mequon, Wisconsin and can report that it was successful for me. Very happy about this because T-Mobile at Starbucks is too expensive given that all their competitors give you free Wi-Fi. Starbucks finally saw the light.

I wonder... is this something they were planning on rolling out when the 3G iPhone arrives -- and then in the inimitable AT&T f*ckup fashion, they screwed up their launch?
I would assume that giving free wi-fi to iPhone users is going to be cheaper and less stressful on their network than having everyone constantly using the limited 3G system they have in place.

Clearly they were just "jumping the gun" with their website publishing. It's bound to be announced officially when the new iPhones come out next month.

Looks like they just removed the feature, can't find it moved anywhere else.

The key is that McDonalds (not sure if it's all or just corporate locations) are also AT&T Wi-Fi locations. It's kinda hard to find a town in the US without a McDonalds...

AT&T lists 71,000 locations. You can view the list here: http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=5949

I've said it before (and got flamed for it) but I'll say it again - so what?

I live in a city with a metro population of over 500,000. I checked the AT&T hotspots page, and there are -TWO- hotspots listed. But my point is, so what? It's hard to go anywhere these days and not find a Wi-Fi signal. Restaurants, bookstores, malls, whatever, there are FREE WiFi hotspots all over the place (and they don't require some whack-ass password/login/mumbo-jumbo, either).

Sorry, but this is nothing more than marketing spin, and based on some of the replies here, it appears to be working....

Any worthwhile company will turn anything it can into positive marketing.

But you have it all wrong. Whether to drive sales or for altruistic reasons, there are many free WiFi spots... but Starbucks is not one of them. They had T-Mobile service and now they have AT&T. But as I stated above, they are offering this to save moneya nd congestion with cell data network.
