While the UK has been reporting a run on current-model iPhones recently, Gizmodo says that the shortage has reached across the pond to New York City. According to an anonymous staffer at the West 14th street Apple Store, "it's been out of stock all week." And to think, you were only worried about rice and flour.
If you check out the picture on Gizmodo, you'll see a line of about 30 people who are waiting for an iPhone at the West 14th street store. These people will probably be very upset in a month or two.

Well in an effort to alleviate this shortage, I'll be auctioning my iPhone off on ebay, complete with case, invisible shield and applecare . . .
Proceeds will benefit the, uh, "Next Big Thing" Fund. ;-)

Having just got back from the US, I know their pain only too well. I force-fed my own (UK) iphone diet coke on day 2 of a 3 week trip, and subsequently embarked on a 4-city apple tour, to no avail. New York was certainly the most difficult (nothing in any of their 3 manhattan stores for the three days I was there), but I had no luck in DC, Boston or San Francisco either. I was looking for the 16GB, for the record (the 8GB is cheaper back home).
The aforementioned sweet-toothed phone has since returned to some semblance of functionality, so I guess like the rest of the world I'll hang on now until June.

Apple picked a bad time to run low on iPhones. Mother's Day, high school and college graduations all fall in May.

Did Apple goof by stopping production of the 1st-gen iPhones too early, or could this mean the new one is actually closer than commonly believed? Though I guess if the AT&T memo really says June 15, that pretty much locks it down to the late-June timeframe.
I guess the one good thing about running out of iPhones early is that people won't be able to return them within the 14-day window when the new one comes out. Maybe they plan to announce it a little earlier (WWDC?) and let the anticipation build for a few weeks while there are no iPhones for sale anywhere.

The iPhone's been in a shortage in the States since March 20th. At least in most Apple stores, and the online store has had a 5-7 day wait for shipping since then. Ordering from the AT&T web site has been smooth though. I ordered one on April 16th for a friend that isn't interested in 3G since she has no coverage in her area and she wanted the current gen. It shipped the next day.

Apple needs to begin selling the new iPhones ASAP. I bought my 16 GB iPhone in February the week after they went on sale. No regrets whatsoever.

Picked up four iphone's(3 for friends and one for me) at the Chicago store on wednesday. When i went there where no 8gb and i guess since they sold out of the 16gb. I know that a new one is coming soon and if the black glossy plastic rumors are true I'm glad i picked up the gen 1 phone.
Also i picked up a MBA (My first mac!)
