Rumor: iPhone 3G Launch on June 9th

Graphic by Jesus Diaz, Gizmodo Gizmodo is reporting that "sources close to the 3G launch" have provided confirmation that the iPhone 3G will be announced at the WWDC 2008 Keynote on June 9th. While this does sound a lot like a rumor, other factors such as nonexistent stocks of first-generation iPhones, the flurry of non-US iPhone launch announcements last week, and the all-but-confirmed Steve Jobs keynote all point to something big.

Gizmodo also speculates that European launch dates are scheduled to follow close on the heels of the US announcement, with iPhone 3G availability in Spain at the grand opening of the Telefonica megastore in Madrid on June 18th.

June 9th sounds good to me, since I can buy my wife an iPhone 3G for our 29th anniversary on that day! What's your take on the iPhone 3G rumor du jour? Give it a reality check by taking our poll:

So if the iPhone is launched Monday and it goes on sale Monday, doesn't that mean that it should be in stores by now, or at least in distribution centers around the country? It would be a logistical nightmare for Apple to announce the phone the same day it goes on sale. My best assumption is that if it is announced Monday morning, it will be on sale by Father's day on Sunday the 15th.

According to recent patents, a new iPhone is on the way, one with a transparent flipscreen! I have no clue whether this is the 3G iphone or not. I hope so! There is also a Tablet notebook version of a macbook rumored as well as a fully multitouch keyboard, that looks really cool. Check 'em out!

It will be announced that day but not released for months later.

Remember the original announcement was made because the FCC filings were about to be made public, this time will be no different.

The federal government will not keep this secret for the entire approval process when everyone else has to have their tech listed while pending approval.

Christmas seems like a logical timeframe and anyone "confirming" sooner is just throwing shit to the wall and hoping it sticks.

I can't see a keynote launch. Apple never releases consumer products at WWDC. However my guess is, seeing the keynote is supposed to be about the iPhone SDK and the SDK is tied into version 2.0 of the OS and 2.0 has code for the 3G version, the 3G iPhone will be announced before WWDC and be for sale sometime after. My money is on an announcement on Tuesday 3nd of June and for sale exactly one year after the first iPhone.

I asked my VIP 02 'agent' today about the possibility of the next iPhone and what it would mean to me (I have a contract on the 1st gen) he of course couldn't say much at all but he did mention he believes iPhone2 will be HSDPA.

In my short two years since my Apple conversion announcements on new products like the original iphone and, upgraded Macs, and even the inclusion of the Mac Book Air (since that was a logical step for Apple) have been pretty obvious.

The rumors game is like celebrity watching only I actually care whats being talked about here and this is just stuff I can't wait for.

Bring it on Steve. June 9th can't come any faster!
