Found Footage: Samsung/Sprint goes after iPhone
It looks like Samsung and Sprint are going after some of the iPhone market share as they show off their video recording capability on the Samsung Instinct. As Apple's competitors are slowly catching up, is it time for Apple to release video recording capabilities for the iPhone? I'm sure that most iPhone users would like to see video recording on the next iteration of the device.

The iPhone wins overall because if you really give a damn about shooting video, you are going to do it with a dedicated video camera, not the shoddy one in the iPhone or the cell phones of today.
It seems as if that's the only thing the Instinct has on the iPhone.
Plus, the combination of a good phone (or bad, I've never handled the Instinct), plus a sinking ship (Sprint/Nextel) is not going to be good.
There are those of us who are tethered to Sprint because of contracts or relationships. Take me, for example. Sprint's employee plan is extremely cheap for unlimited data and text (I have access because I have tons of friends who work there) is only $15/mo. This phone looks AWESOME to me who has coveted the iPhone from afar, but can't justify switching carriers. I also take advantage of the plethora of people in my family on Sprint.
I'm PUMPED because Sprint's phones have sucked and this is a great alternative to those of us who (for whatever reason) can't get the iPhone.
If it all came down to features the iPhone wouldn't win. What does the iPhone have that other high end phones don't? Maybe there is something (YouTube videos?) but I can't think of it. Compare the iPhone to a Blackberry Curve. iPhone is missing GPS, Wireless modem support, video, and exchange support.
The thing that makes the iPhone a success is execution on features.
* By far best overall interface. As Jobs said when it came out- your fingers are the best control device. (I still think an extra button would be nice to emulate control click)
* Best web browser. I hated my Blackberry and Nokia browsers.
* Best email. One could argue Blackberry is easier to use and faster but it doesn't display the full range of message content that the iPhone handles.
* Great music and video player
* Nice execution on Google Maps integration (should be sweet with GPS built in)
It's not a perfect phone but you know Apple will keep pushing forward in it's goal to take over the high end phone market.
I watched this. It will be funny when tomorrow some if not all of the Sprint claims will be null and void. Great Job Sprint wasting money producing those slick videos. LOL

Instinct vs iPhone
Life
winner:iPhone
Uh.....My iPhone has video recording caps......Sooooooooo there goes the basis of their commercial.
June 07 2008 at 8:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHmm but does the video recording actually record at 15+ FPS currently? Not on the iPhone.
Also, Sprint doesn't use WiFi as a crutch to limit cell network functionality on their phones. Any of 'em. Instinct included. This is from a guy who shelled out for the iPhone, though not when it was $600 heh.
Additionally, the Instinct's web browsing speeds will probably top the iPhone's, even whe the iPhone is on AT&T still-rather-paltry 3G network. With Rev. A the limitation is Sprint's network capacity (which is good), not how fast the phone is actually capable of pulling data down.
Don't forget that EvDO has been around longer in a stable form in the US than HSDPA. Thus the battery life concerns of ole Jobsy have been resolved on CDMA for the most part.
Yes, I know that the web browser on the Instinct is not as good as Mobile Safari, however I have a solution: Skyfire. But that's just me...and Skyfire is in beta right now.
Yes, I know that the iPhone screen is higher-resolution than the Instinct's. On the other hand, the Instinct is smaller than the iPhone.
Yes, I know that the next iPhone is *rumored* to have GPS. Which has been in CDMA phones, particularly SprintNextel models, for years. And in the Instinct.
The iPhone may have YouTube (which everyone has forgotten about by now aince EDGE video quality is lousy) but the Instinct has Sprint TV (better quality, comparable to WiFi YouTube...anywhere) and radio (iPhone doesn't have that, yet at least).
I could go on but the iPhone fanboys would crowd me out. Guess we just have to wait 'til Monday to find out whether it's released. And if so, which types of dishes it will wash in its built-in kitchen sink. This is from a person who has the flagship smartphones of both AT&T (iPhone) and Sprint (HTC Mogul) and by extension VZW (same phone as HTC Mogul). From a person who uses his Sprint phone to make a WiFi hotspot in which to use his iPhone to browse the web, because EDGE is a lame network tech for 2007, let alone 2008.
Fanboy shields, up!
ian, I understand your points, that looks like a cool phone, and I'm not blind to advances by other companies, but this Sprint isn't available yet and many factors will need to be re-evaluated on Monday.
June 08 2008 at 3:14 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes, because we all buy smartphones with the facility of shooting video.
June 07 2008 at 8:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnyone else happen to notice that the hand seems to have the "#1" on it's middle finger? Bitter much? hahaha
June 07 2008 at 7:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNah, I'm pretty sure its his pointer finger. Check the vid on sprint's website, pause at 00:11:64 and you can count 3 fingers before you get to the one extended with the #1 hand on it.
Now it would be funny if they did have it on the middle finger and then get slapped with a fine from the FCC... ;)
After reading Engadget's hands-on, it seems the browser is the typical mobile crud, nothing approaching the UI of Mobile Safari. That makes a phone like this useless in my book.
