AT&T talks iPhone 3G plans, apps

AT&T just posted a press release which answers a few questions about the new iPhone 3G. First off, AT&T remains the exclusive iPhone carrier in the US (though there will be plenty of other carriers in other countries). The iPhone 3G is subsidized, and the revenue sharing agreement between Apple and AT&T has ended (you might recall that Apple got a cut of monthly subscriber fees for the iPhone, though no longer).

But what about the service plans? It looks like AT&T is getting rid of those easy to choose from iPhone plans, and letting people get whatever voice plan they want, with data plans sold separately. The data plans are as follows:
  • Consumers will pay $30 a month for unlimited 3G data plus $39.99 a month (to start) for voice.
  • Business users will need to pay $45 a month for unlimited data plus a voice plan.
This means that the base iPhone monthly cost for most consumers will go from $59.99 a month (that's the base first gen iPhone plan with unlimited data, 450 minutes a month, and 200 text messages) to $69.99 a month. High speed networking costs money, people!

AT&T also noted that they, themselves, are working on an iPhone app. Yellowpages.com mobile is an iPhone app that will let you search the Yellowpages on your phone. Not that exciting in and of itself, but using Core Location, Yellowpages.com Mobile will know where you are and search local listings based on your current position. Not too shabby. It will also have 'social networking' features allowing you to share reviews with your friends and plan events.

From my research, apple is making it hard to unlock the new iphones. If you buy the iphone you must sign a 2 year at&t contract. If you terminate the contract early, you must send the iphone back or pay a fee. Don't know how much that would cost, but definately makes it more difficult to unlock.

What if you already have AT&T? What will it cost then? I have 1400 shared minutes. Unlimited N&W and Unlimited Mobile to Mobile and Unlimited Texting. What is it going to cost for me to get the iPhone 3G?

That is why Apple should make the phone once more a GoPhone, like the first one. Buy it for 400$ and unlock it. No agreement, no nothing. That would be our revenge :D

You can send text messages free through some online 3rd party software, so technically, you wouldnt have to add sms texting...

Well, I'm glad to see people here aren't being fooled by AT&T's bull****.

Yeah, I remember when I thought $20 for data was ridiculous, ESPECIALLY since the reason why AT&T charged $20 is because it's a 3G network, but iPhone didn't support 3G.

From what I can tell, it seems like AT&T is trying to justify this because it's a new 3G data plan instead of an EDGE plan which is an outright lie.

That's why I basically call for a boycott of iPhone 3G until something changes. Has nothing to do with Apple.

but hey, my current iPhone works great anyway. who needs 3G? Screw AT&T.

So let me get this straight, you must pay for a 3G data plan (unless you don't want a data plan) no matter what? Only a very very very small part of the country is actually 3G covered.

What about those of us that are not in an area covered by 3g. Why should we have to pay for a faster network that we cant use. Thats messed up.

What burns me about this is that my husband is a current user and we want to get a second phone for me and possibly upgrade his. It looks like both he and I are going to end up paying $10/month for 3G service that doesn't exist in the town that we live in. That's $240/year we will be paying for the 3G service when 99% of the time we will be on EDGE.

They are forcing me to pay for what is in essence a premium service they don't offer where I live (or in about half of this country) if I want an iPhone. THAT'S NUTS.
