Confirmed: GoPhone is No Go and in-store Activation only

It isn't the news we were hoping for after Scott posted earlier. Mark Siegel of AT&T public relations has now officially confirmed that AT&T will not offer GoPhone plans for the 3G iPhone and that activation will take place in-store only.

Does anyone know if I can upgrade from gophone prepaid account to postpaid account, of course keep my number and transfer my balance to new account. I found att documentation which says I should be able to do that, but has anyone really did that?
August 03 2008 at 8:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI find this interesting, considering my iphone runs on the go-phone service... I'm hoping they won't give me trouble when I try to upgrade.
June 10 2008 at 11:50 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm kind of skeptical about this... When the first iPhone came out the same thing was being said. I even worked at an Apple retail store and wasn't sure if prepay was an option. Still got the phone knowing that I could not activate it due to credit problems and now I'm a happy iPhone GoPhone user a year later. I have to wait and see what happens when we all have them in our hands.
If this is true though... At least I have iPhone 2.0... GPS and 3G would be fun but not for the $700 deposit that AT&T wants me to give them. No phone is worth $1000 plus a two year contract!
I don't understand why I would pay to be stuck for two years but...
My fingers are crossed for GoPhone!
what would appear to me to be the "new way" to get one of these new iPhones would be to simply walk in and buy and activate. then the next day, cancel. pay the canx fee and the new iPhone is yours. if there's one thing I know about Mac folks, it's that someone somewhere will 're-jailbreak' the new iPhone and the game is on again...
that'd give me a brand new iPhone that I can then software break and use as I please...isn't that the Mac way?
Jim
Are you always this retarded?
30-DAY CANCELLATION PERIOD/TERMINATION
You may terminate this Agreement within thirty (30) days after activating service without paying an Early Termination Fee. You will pay for service fees and charges incurred through the termination date, but AT&T will refund your activation fee, if any, if you terminate within three (3) days of activating the service. Also, you may have to return any handsets and accessories purchased with this Agreement. If you terminate after the 30th day but before expiration of the Agreement's Service Commitment, you will pay AT&T an Early Termination Fee for each wireless telephone number associated with the service. Either party may terminate this Agreement at any time after your Service Commitment ends with thirty (30) days notice to the other party. We may terminate this Agreement at any time without notice if we cease to provide service in your area. We may interrupt or terminate your service without notice for any conduct that we believe violates this Agreement or any terms and conditions of your rate plan, or if you behave in an abusive, derogatory, or similarly unreasonable manner with any of our representatives, or if we discover that you are underage, or if you fail to make all required payments when due, or if we have reasonable cause to believe that your Equipment is being used for an unlawful purpose or in a way that may adversely affect our service, or if you provided inaccurate credit information or we believe your credit has deteriorated and you refuse to pay any requested advance payment or deposit.

O2 have just announced their plans for the UK at http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone
Available on Pay as you go. Price not mentioned.
Contract:
£30/mo 8Gb £99 16Gb £159
£35/mo 8Gb £99 16Gb £159
£45/mo 8Gb free 16Gb £59
£75/mo 8Gb free 16Gb free
All with unlimited data and 'reduced roaming rates' (whatever that means).
All 18 month contracts.. *very* competitive for a new phone. The pay and go ones will fly off the shelves unless they're exorbitantly priced IMO.
exactly my feeling - it's a bit weird though that O2 introduced prepaid when ATT dropped it (I'm lovin it) :) and I think that they delay the announcement on PAYG prices, cause they're negotiating with Apple how high the price can be w/o contract :)
still, can't imagine they'll go higher than current iPhones, i.e. £269 and £329, maybe a tad less...
And Puerto Rico is left out once again regarding iphone coverage & availability even thought we have AT&T and the iphone works just fine here...
June 10 2008 at 4:37 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyLet the bitching begin -- just wait until the kids discover what 'code signing' actually means. If you're waiting for an unlocked iPhone 3G, I'm afraid you might be waiting a long time.
As it stands, considering all the "I won't buy one" comments, it doesn't seem like Apple is even going to notice you being gone... Kinda separates the chaff from the wheat, doesn't it.
Furthermore, with all the bitching over the $30 data plan *which is still A LOT better than the $50-$60 for comparable data plans from the other carriers*, you kids seem to have overlooked that AT&T also dropped the price of the minimum plan, from $55 to $40 per month.
Either way, delicious irony from where I'm sitting - so, is any of the information Erica felt like posting in her 'what does the iPhone cost' article still valid? At all?
âFurthermore, with all the bitching over the $30 data plan *which is still A LOT better than the $50-$60 for comparable data plans from the other carriers*â
That's just inaccurate. I pay $70 a month at T-Mobile, the only other statewide provider capable of powering the GPS iPhone, for 1,000 voice minutes, unlimited email and unlimited data on my unlocked iPhone. That's 400 more minutes than ATT's old bundled plan at the same price point. That, along with their reputation for notoriously shoddy customer service is why I unlocked my phone in the first place.
Considering how sloppy your own fact gathering skills are, maybe you might want to consider laying off Erica for a day or two and try redirecting your desperate pleas for attention at someone who isn't married with kids.
Seriously, dude, you're averaging nearly a post a day on TUAW at an average of 193 words, never about your own mac experiences, always along the lines of A) "Ooh, those lawless unlocking hooligans are at it again! or  B) Erica is encouraging them to flout convention and operate outside the boundaries of the End User License Agreement! I don't understand how the authorities can allow this to continue!"
I've never really understood why you cared, but it must really grate on your nerves to know that despite all your protestations, nothing really changes.Â
I still have an unlocked phone that does everything a locked one does except visual voicemail, but also allows me to receive Skype-in calls, move files freely between my macBook and iPhone and not have to pay ATT's exorbitant roaming charges every time I travel to another country.
As far as this new policy goes, I'm surprised ATT didn't do this sooner, but it's not going to stem the flow of unlocked iPhones one iota. All it's going to do is change the point of origin from the US to any of of the countries that don't tie service to a single provider.
It's probably going to cost more than $300, but then I wouldn't expect to get a contract-free phone at a subsidized price. Fair is fair.
I'm very happy with my current iPhone. It's jailbroken and unlocked and I have a GoPhone plan that saves me a lot of money since I'm not a frequent caller and live around a bunch of WiFi hotspots for my data needs.
I can understand folks that need a lot of talktime, so this may be for them, but this new iPhone does nothing for me. GPS is not a selling point, because they're going to make you use the 3G data network for GPS functions. There will be no "free" GPS services without being on the data network. I have a small Garmin handheld GPS for when I really need GPS. Most of the time, I can arrange to already have that information on the iphone for me (through Google Maps).
For some, this will be great news, for me... well, I love Apple, they are the only computers in my house, but I'll have to skip this update.
We'll have to wait and see, but I
Interesting that eBay already has a page full of 3G iPhones for pre-order from $500 and up. Are these guys taking a punt on the cancellation penalty - or what?
June 10 2008 at 3:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's what I'm wondering: right now 3G is not available across most of the country. Will 3G coverage be considerably expanded? Why should we pay more for a service most people don't have access to?
June 10 2008 at 1:38 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFrankly I'm not aware if HSDPA is even available in my area. It would suck big time if I had to pay $10 more a month than previously if I bought a new iphone.
sigh
