iPhone 2.0 firmware will ship in early July, touch users pay $9.95
The WWDC keynote is still ongoing, but one tidbit that we have to bring you immediately: we have a launch date for the iPhone 2.0 firmware and the iTunes App Store, "early July." iPhone users get the upgrade free of charge, and iPod touch users can download it for a $9.95 charge. Applications under 10 MB can be downloaded over the cellular network, and larger apps can be delivered over WiFi or via an iTunes sync.Enterprise users can deliver apps directly to their users, and there's also an 'ad-hoc' delivery method for up to 100 iPhones.

THATS BULL SH*T!!! And Apple Knows it@!
The January Software Upgrade Cost 20 Bux for 4 Apps. Now for 1 App they're Charging iPod Touch Users 10 Dollars!?!
I cant believe how Apple Screws their Ipod Touch Customers. I'm Surprised people didnt Boo Yet!!

Why do you think it's a ripoff. Please show your work.

because the warranty on ANY iPod Touch has not expired yet!!! They're not quite a year old as they came out after iPhone 1.0! I'd expect software support for new features at least as long as the 1 year warranty period. Not providing that level of support for a product and it's users is childish. Zune 1.0 users got a full update to version 2.0 with as many features as the hardware could handle when the new model came out. What the hell is up with Apple, other than Touch is a "stand alone" product and they aren't getting monthly kickbacks so those customers aren't "important". Screw the BS accounting rules, it's crappy customer service without justification.

The real bullshit is, that apple moves the release as they want... and if it's released, it's as buggy as in june >.

Because it needs to be tested on all of the carriers' networks to ensure that it doesn't cause problems. The process takes about 3 weeks, which leads us right up to... you guessed it, July.

Perhaps there are FCC approval issues causing a delay of the 3G phone to July. We all know how slow government bureaucracies can be.

Did they even discuss the carriers? I don't remember reading about that.
Are they not still AT&T exclusive?

also, they do need time to approve non-bigwig companies for the App Store, and I presume that there'll be an SDK update that will require apps to be tested before released into the store?

Why bother getting the Touch? Just get an iPhone and just hack around the activation. I did it. Plus the iPhone has a speaker, microphone and camera.
I don't why you would ever get the Touch.

I wasn't until now that the iPhone became the better deal. I've been holding off for the iPhone on T-Mobile (locked into contract) and iPod Touch has been good to me. One thing worth noting here is that the iPod Touch and the iPhone 1.0 are the first of their kind to get updated firmware beyond their version. In the past, the 2.0 would make all 1.x versions obsolete, and we'd just chalk it up to Apple's grand scheme. For example, my iPod Color (4G) could easily handle video, but they made it obsolete by only featuring video in the 5G. Anyway, I'm off to find someone selling their iPhone 1.0 for a steal.

Who thinks this $199 price is subsidized? I love my pay-by-month plan right now with the iPhone 1.0...

Definitely subsidized. Hopefully AT&T will let me renew 7 months early to replace my broken Pearl.
