iPhone 2.0 firmware will ship in early July, touch users pay $9.95

The WWDC keynote is still ongoing, but one tidbit that we have to bring you immediately: we have a launch date for the iPhone 2.0 firmware and the iTunes App Store, "early July." iPhone users get the upgrade free of charge, and iPod touch users can download it for a $9.95 charge. Applications under 10 MB can be downloaded over the cellular network, and larger apps can be delivered over WiFi or via an iTunes sync.

Enterprise users can deliver apps directly to their users, and there's also an 'ad-hoc' delivery method for up to 100 iPhones.

More in the liveblog, and in the feature page...

I'm always last lap with the responses to these things and you've all probably moved on to new and better things, but something about this iphone 2.0 software is bugging me.

You know how itouch users have to pay for these upgrades because apple "account" for these differently, which personally I think that's a bag of s**t, since they developing for iphone anyway so what diference does it make it itouch users download it too for free. It's not like apple has to make house calls to upgrade these things.

Anyway that is not my point, my concern is that apple have now discontinued manufacturing the iphone 1.0 and are about to release a new 3g iphone. So my question is will apple starting "accounting" for the iphone 1.0 differently now and make us pay for future software upgrades just the itouch users do now.

more worryingly is will they cease to release updates for the iphone 1.0 and itouch now they have a shiny new phone that they want us to buy.

I hope this makes sense becuase I have just finished a night shift and am very tired.

For us folks that do not reside in the states, it has been quite hard to get the amazing iPhone. However, we managed and could use it with almost no problem. But now that the iPhone 3G has become international we are thrilled to see that we will be able to the same and at a lower price.
Can't wait for 7/11!!

any word on other 2.0 firmware features? Where is Cut and Paste? Stereo/A2DP support for bluetooth? 3rd party app support can fill alot of gaps, but not those...

As an iPod touch owner, I'm really not as concerned about forking over $9.95 as I am the repeated delay. Back at the SDK unveiling in March (which we were told should have been in February) we were told to expect firmware 2.0 by late June ... (now "early July") Maybe I'm just too impatient, but it seems like we've been waiting forever and we just keep being told to wait. As far as the price, I'm fine with that. Remember, it's not just the App store that we're getting, but also get all the enterprise updates too, and as a student on campus, I'm really needing the 802.1X support.

Who thinks this $199 price is subsidized? I love my pay-by-month plan right now with the iPhone 1.0...

Definitely subsidized. Hopefully AT&T will let me renew 7 months early to replace my broken Pearl.

Why bother getting the Touch? Just get an iPhone and just hack around the activation. I did it. Plus the iPhone has a speaker, microphone and camera.

I don't why you would ever get the Touch.

I wasn't until now that the iPhone became the better deal. I've been holding off for the iPhone on T-Mobile (locked into contract) and iPod Touch has been good to me. One thing worth noting here is that the iPod Touch and the iPhone 1.0 are the first of their kind to get updated firmware beyond their version. In the past, the 2.0 would make all 1.x versions obsolete, and we'd just chalk it up to Apple's grand scheme. For example, my iPod Color (4G) could easily handle video, but they made it obsolete by only featuring video in the 5G. Anyway, I'm off to find someone selling their iPhone 1.0 for a steal.

also, they do need time to approve non-bigwig companies for the App Store, and I presume that there'll be an SDK update that will require apps to be tested before released into the store?
