Whither the 1.0 iPhone resale?
If you managed to find a quiet dark place during the keynote, you might have heard several tens of thousands of small cries in the distance. What were those cries? They were the sounds of iPhone resale values hitting near zero. With new 3G models selling at rock bottom prices and iPhone sales rolling out around the world, the poor iPhone 1.0 has gone the way of most other outmoded technology.
Sure the iPhone 1.0 won't die right away. It is full 2.0 firmware compatible, and it is an absolutely terrific device. But I'd be surprised if the first generation units sold for much more than about a hundred bucks after today's announcements. With new 8GB going for $199 and 3G service available, many of today's iPhones are going to become tomorrow's high-end iPod touch units.
Instead of resale I predict that very soon now a lot of spouses and teenage children will be receiving their very first iPhones hand-me-downs. What do you think? Upgrade? Or stick with the iPhone as it is? Let us know in the comments.

After a little research I don't know why anybody would sell their iPhone in anticipation of the new one. The only benefits are the GPS and 3G connectivity. AT&T is gong to kill you on the fees. Not only is the unlimited internet going up to 30.00 but that doesnt include text message. By the time you add text mesage, over the length of a 2 years contract youll pay almost 500 dollard more then the current plans. So you'll pay 200 les for the phone and 500 more for the fees.

I am surprised that Erica can write down something like this. I'm sure she can do a simple calculation. Like adding up the $199 and the huge cost of a two-year contract at $59 per month (whereas you can probably get a decent package on an unlocked 1.0 iPhone for at most half that price -- so 3G iPhone users will pay $30 per months in excess).
It should have been: "I'd be surprised if the first generation units sold for much less than about 500 bucks after today's announcements. With new 8GB going for $199+24x30=$820, many of today's iPhones are going to become tomorrow's least expensive iPhone solution."
I have a stupid question: if you buy the iPhone at the Apple store, is it still going to be $199/$299?
June 10 2008 at 4:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOn the contrary, the old iPhone has a number of advantages still:
* $10/month cheaper data plan (which I think will be more tolerable with the App store, since apps won't be loading remote HTML and graphics with every page refresh - just data!)
* can't be unlocked or used with other carriers
* cheap plastic housing .. i know several people who prefer the metallic casing. plus it's actually smaller
I think we may actually see original iPhone prices go up!
Craigslist rules! Just got $250 for my 8gig.
Now I have to use the crappy free phone I got when signed up with AT&T for the next month.
Me too! 260 for mine. just gotta live with this crappy nokia till next month

June 10 2008 at 4:08 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI will hang on to mine for another year. All I will be missing is GPS and 3G. Since the 3G isn't actually 3G speed it's no big deal to me. Edge is super slow so twice as fast as super slow is still slow. Google maps works just fine when not in my car. I feel the new iphone is great for new users, but no biggy for us already on board.
I'll wait til next year for the 32GB version with a 3 MP camera, flash, A2DP stereo bluetooth and video ichat for $199.
What you forgot is that the old ones can be used with any contract, the 200 dollar for a new one are "with contract", so the old iphones are still worth way more than those 100 dollars...but the market will be flooded i guess.
June 10 2008 at 3:10 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHey Erica,
Quick question. My iPhone 1.0 has started showing some dead pixels (and I tried using a website that claimed to fix it for u by scrolling thru an animated gif - no dice). Do you think Apple will replace it for me if I take it to them? What do you think they'll do now that there are no 1.0's "officially" available? Or are they? Also, would it be better to do it now, or wait till Jul 11 and hope they'd swap me for a 3g (that is if they even concede that they'd replace my phone for dead pixels?)
thanks,
Nash
