List of cities that are in AT&T's 3G coverage

That fancy iPhone 3G won't feel much speedier than your first gen iPhone if you aren't in an area that is covered by AT&T's high-speed 3G network. Luckily, AT&T has a list of cities (yes, if you're not in a metropolitan area chances are you'll be using EDGE more often than not) that have 3G coverage.

AT&T doesn't offer up a map of the US with their 3G coverage highlighted, so I took the liberty of using their 'Coverage Viewer' and my copy of Acorn to whip up a full US map with AT&T's 3G coverage in deep blue. Check it out here (the map isn't perfect, I know, but it does give you a good idea of the extent of AT&T's 3G network).

Update: I've added another map that only shows AT&T's data coverage. 3G is the deepest blue, while EDGE is slightly lighter (and more widespread).

To Thomas (comment #6). I also live in Lake Charles, and an At&T sales rep told me that Lake Charles was added as a 3G coverage city right before the iPhone 3G launch. Just for your information.

It's good if you want 3G, but I'm usually around wifi anyway, so it'll just mean an extra charge on my data plan!

Thanks BattleScarred, I am still going to get it even though we do not have 3G yet. My sprint contract is done July 10th and the iPhone is the 11th. It is destiny I think.

your AT&T 3G coverage list for cities shows
Springfield, MO but the coverage map on AT&T's
website does not show coverage in Springfield, MO.
Does anyone know if Springfield has 3G?

Hey Zach, this is the best I could find for current info.

Omaha, Lincoln to get better network from AT&T

(Omaha World-Herald (NE) (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jun. 11--Monday, Apple introduced its third-generation iPhone.

Tuesday, AT&T, the only U.S. wireless service on which the phone can be used, said it will upgrade its Omaha-Lincoln network to the third-generation technology needed to get everything the iPhone has to offer.

The new iPhones go on sale July 11. The upgraded network, already available in 280 U.S. markets, will be ready in Omaha and Lincoln by the end of the year.

AT&T's 3G network carries upload speeds of 500 to 800 kilobits per second and downloads of up to 1,400 kbs (1.4 megabits). AT&T's Edge network in Omaha and Lincoln now has speeds of 75 to 135 kbs with bursts to 200 kbs.

The iPhone will work on the Edge network, a step below 3G, but the phone's most attractive features won't. Those include video and music clips, color Internet access, video messaging and advanced data services.

The new service will be another shot fired in the battle between AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Verizon's planned acquisition of Alltel Wireless, announced last week, will make it the biggest U.S. wireless service, as measured by the number of customers. AT&T will drop to second place.

On May 4, AT&T began offering wireless TV service in Omaha and Lincoln. That was four days after Verizon Wireless turned on an upgraded Lincoln broadband wireless offering that carries speeds like those of AT&T's 3G.

Verizon already had the faster service in Omaha and started wireless TV service here a year ago.

Apple announced two new models of the iPhone on Monday, one at $199 and the other $299.

BTW, their "coverage viewer" is a bit outdated, since Charleston, SC actually has 3G now.

All i know is that I live in Omaha NE and I plan on getting the new iPhone. The only problem is that we don't have 3G yet. I went to AT&T and they said by the end of summer or by the latest Thanksgiving, we would have 3G. They told me that the towers are up but not "Turned On" I guess. I don't know if I believe this but I asked multiple other questions like, how much is text messages, can I only get edge until 3G is here, will my discount work since I work for a company that gets 11% off my annual bill. I asked these questions to 3 different stores and everyone said, "We aren't certain of these answers as of yet." Wouldn't you expect them to know this since it just got announced and everyone wants to know. And by the way, we have 1/2 a million people in Omaha and a Apple Store. We aint no boondocks

AT&T's list of cities with 3G coverage is not all inclusive. Their 3G coverage map shows my neighborhood has 3G, but the city is not listed. Same with where I work. So don't go by the list of cities as the final word. Dig deeper in the coverage map.

Actually, at least for us (Charleston, SC), it's the opposite - the list includes us but the map doesn't. Go figure.

Wow, I see. 3G coverage in the US has more holes than many third-world countries. On the opposite, If you see some countries in Europe, they have up to 90% 3G/HDSPA (up to 7.8 Mbit/s) coverage :)

From the sound of it the 3G data plan being $30 is specific to the iPhone. AT&T, and the world, I'm sure recognizes that iPhones generate WAY more traffic than and other 3G devices ever did and is pricing accordingly.

That said, I think a 50% bump in the data plan price is excessive, especially in lieu of the limited coverage and lack of ability to tether to another device.

OT, but I have to laugh whenever someone says "near wi-fi speeds". What exactly is that? 11b? 11g? 11n? 11a? Hooked up to what? 100Mbs fiber? 768kbs aDSL?

Wi-Fi is not a speed.
