O2 offers free iPhone 3G with some plans

It looks like our friends across the pond (as pretentious bloggers say) are getting a pretty good deal on the iPhone 3G. O2 released their iPhone 3G service information last night, and here are some highlights:
  • For a monthly service fee, or tariff, of £45 you get a free 8 gig iPhone, or the 16 gig version for £59.
  • For £75 a month you get either an 8 gig or 16 gig iPhone 3G for free (I'd go with the 16 gig model myself).
  • For a monthly fee of £30 or £35 the 8 gig iPhone 3G will cost you £99 while the 16 gig will go for £159.
Interestingly, the iPhone 3G will be offered on O2's Pay & Go plans, unlike the very similar service from AT&T which the iPhone 3G does not qualify for, at least here in the States. Additionally, UK iPhone buyers will be able to purchase their iPhones online, while we in the States will have to go to our local Apple or AT&T stores.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

C'mon AT&T, they are already kicking your arse with 3G coverage. Don't let them beat you with this too, seriously. I am embarrassed.

To all the grumpy English folk (me being a non-grumpy Englishman), please stop complaining for once. The £30 deal is such because most people average a £35 contract, and most people ask for 600+ minutes. I don't know where you got your crazy stats from about 200-300 minutes but having worked in O2, I know what most people demand. The £30 is one that O2 has always used to get people onto the £35. Simple.

I agree with the person who made the 200-300 minutes statement, but if as you say, having worked at O2 most people ask for 600+ mins, then:

A: Why introduce a £30 option that no-one will take up, being that it's so poor
or
B: If they're going to introduce it, why not at least make it have some relationship to the pricing structure of the other 3 tariffs in the range?

After all if you say most people want 600+ mins, they would hardly be jeopardising the £35 tariff by offering 200 - 300 mins and texts, because as you say most people want double that so would naturally look at the tariff above, while others, like the person who made the 200/300 mins statement and also most people I know might be tempted by a reasonable £30 tariff.

While I have no qualms about paying for the phone, as it is, rather than paying O2 £30 a month, I'd be better off buying an Ipod Touch and getting between 200 - 500 mins etc on another network for half the price.

wow, I believe those are the old prices, have they been confirmed for the new model as well? if so, that is just absurd pricing from o2 there...

So I upgrade to a new 3G... end my old contract early, and then I have an old 2G that I can jailbreak to use overseas?

Does anyone see a problem with this logic?

All you missed was "start a new 18 month contract".

So for the first time us Brits are getting a better deal than our Colonial Cousins? Sorted :)
I was shocked when I saw they'd be doing a PAYG model, I can finally justify buying one. That is if they don't charge too much of a premium over the contract plan. Or just buy a contract phone and unlock it at home when the tools come to hand ;)

Interestingly, if you buy a phone in the UK that is on Pay as you Go, it can be unlocked if the consumer asks the network to. There is usually a small £20-30 charge for this, but they can't refuse to, as you've purchased a phone, and should have the freedom to use it anywhere...

Problem is, its not so sweet a deal as they make out

In this country (the UK), on a £30/month deal, we expect

a) Free phone
b) Unlimited (or stupidly high number) of texts
c) Huge number of minutes

ok, the lack of a) I'm going to ignore, since it has the iPod feature, so saves on the iPod

But, 75mins and 125 texts for that amount of money is a complete rip-off in the UK
