What first generation iPhone owners can expect
You may have heard that Apple released a minor update to their line of iPhones yesterday. No big deal, you weren't going to ditch your first generation iPhone and run for the 3G hill, were you? Oh, so you are going to upgrade? Oh well, this post might not be for you then. However, for those of you looking to keep your "old" iPhone, here is what you can expect in the coming months. Apple will be providing a free upgrade for all existing first generation iPhone owners. You will be upgraded to the exact same firmware that makes the 3G iPhone tick. Apple has posted a web page that details exactly what you can expect from the new 2.0 firmware.
Some of the main features we're looking forward to include:
- AppStore
- Full Exchange support
- MobileMe
- Mass e-mail move, delete and save images
- Contacts search
- Additional language support
- Full iWork and Microsoft Office viewer support
- Scientific Calculator

Apple made such a big deal about Notes and To-do's being in Mail so you could easily track them and have them available in all the major apps...why the heck can you STILL not sync them with the iPhone where they are the most useful?!!
What I really want to know about software 2.0 and the 1st gen iPhone is whether the location aware apps like Loopt can use the triangulation feature, or whether they are dependent on the GPS in the 3G? I wasn't too excited about the GPS functionality (I wanted video conferencing), but the location aware apps make it compelling to upgrade.
wooo hooo... it comes with SIM ejector tool... LOL...
June 11 2008 at 3:43 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replydid anyone notice if you would be able to view files from idisk on your iphone, such as numbers files, xls. etc.? Or if youll be able to view calender attachments on it?
June 10 2008 at 2:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDoes anybody know if games/apps will be tied to a specific iPhone (with a specific serial number)? That will not be acceptable if the phone needs to be exchanged or if we upgrade to a newer phone with more disk space. Also, will we be able to load the app onto only one iPhone - in case there is more than one iPhone in a household and more than one person syncs with iTunes. I'm assuming that nobody has that info yet, but it would be helpful if the editors would try to find out this info.

Don't get me wrong the added features are great, and mostly geared towards the enterprise, which will make a huge dent in RIM sales.
I guess we will have to wait a bit longer for the "consumer" improvements.
Hey, what about cut and paste?
And what about the promised feature that would enable the landscape keyboard function in all apps that utilize the keyboards?
And what about cut and paste? Remember, cut and paste?!?
My question is: Will AT&T force a new 2-year contract on a 2G phone? I'd like to kick down my "old" phone to my girlfriend, who is leaving for France in a year. Her AT&T contract is almost up, and we will want to jailbreak/unlock before she leaves. That is, unless she becomes bound to AT&T by merely adding the EDGE iPhone plan to her service.
Ironically, it's AT&T's policy on 2G iphones that will determine whether I buy 3G.
How about searchable email?
June 10 2008 at 11:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow about flippin MMS support? You know... the technology that's been on cell phones since 2000. Why the frick can't my wife's crap phone send me pictures?
June 10 2008 at 11:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyActually it can. They get directed to www.viewmymessage.com. It's quite easy actually. And sure beats paying $$ each time she sends you a picture. Perhaps you should give her your iPhone and get yourself a new 3G. Problem solved :)
June 10 2008 at 12:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, it's easy. All you do is open the SMS message. Click the link to viewmymessage.com. Enter the pin number. Oh... I forgot to write that down. Go back to MMS. Write the pin number (completely unmemorizable) and password on a scratch sheet of paper. Go back to viewmymessage.com enter in the pin and password on this tiny keyboard. Click submit.
Real flippin' easy. She'd do better with a carrier pigeon in my opinion. It's unacceptable. Period.
