App Store available on June 27th?
During the keynote every time the App Store was mention people would say it was 'launching soon,' or that their apps would be 'available at launch.' No one mentioned a specific launch day. Apple might have let the cat out of the bag though. The image to the right was just snapped off of Apple's Australian iPod Touch page. It clearly stated that the App Store, and presumably the 2.0 firmware for both the iPhone and the iPod Touch, will be available on June 27th. That contradicts the 'early July' timeline mentioned in the keynote.I know I speak for all iPhone/iPod touch users when I say: we wouldn't mind getting this firmware a little early, Apple.
Thanks, Samantha.

I heard that 1.1.4 already has the framework to support the AppStore. If this is true the AppStore could in fact launch on June 27th followed up by an iPhone OS 2.0 launch on July 11th.
I also noticed this while watching the Stevenote. They never gave an actual date for the AppStore... they just kept saying "soon"..... :)

I'm inclined to think they would want to get the 2.0 release out to the 6 million odd gen 1 iPhones before the release of iPhone 3G, purely to ease the load on the servers. Otherwise you have all the 1st gen trying to download the new firmware as well as all the new 3G customer trying to register their phones.

I totally agree with him...

Hmmm....a store that nobody can shop at. Steve's getting a bit too Zen for us. ;-)

Something tells me it *was* June, but was pushed to the stated July 11. Underestimated the workload?

So here's what I wanna know - Are those of us with jailbroken iPhones going to have to restore them to be able to use the App store?

Quite likely, but no telling until its available.

Another question...If I buy apps for my 1st gen iPhone, will I have to repurchase them when I upgrade to the iPhone 3G?
Are the FairPlay restrictions the same as for Music. Can I buy a game and sync it to my iPhone and my wife's?

i hope this is true.

Updating to 2.0 will likely cause jailbroken iPhones to be restored back to 'normal'. If we don't want to loose those 3rd party apps we are currently running on our iPhones, were going to have and wait until someone cracks that update. Meaning we might have to wait a bit longer. I have one question: does the 2.0 update for 1st Gen iPhones include GPS, or is that a whole different thing that only the 3G iPhone will be able to do?

Use PWNAGE/WinPWN. Both crack 2.0 perfectly fine.

Does anybody know if games/apps will be tied to a specific iPhone (with a specific serial number)? That will not be acceptable if the phone needs to be exchanged or if we upgrade to a newer phone with more disk space. Also, will we be able to load the app onto only one iPhone - in case there is more than one iPhone in a household and more than one person syncs with iTunes. I'm assuming that nobody has that info yet, but it would be helpful if the editors would try to find out this info.

FairPlay isn't tied to a single computer or iPod. Rather, it's tied to your iTunes store login. (With, of course, a limit to the number of devices.)
I would hazard a guess that purchased apps will run on a number of iPhones/iPods that are synced with a single iTunes account. No guesses on how many that might be, but I'd assume at least a couple to accommodate families, husband/wife, etc.
Or maybe the restriction on number of devices is left up to the developer?

Does anyone know what the typical size of some of the apps will be? I'm was going to get the 16gig iPhone but wanted to be sure I have plenty of room for music, video, games and other new apps.

never mind. I could have swore I saw a 32 Gig iPhone the day of the keynote but don't see one on the website.

Well, it can't launch after the 11th, and it would make sense to drop 2.0 ~ a week before the new phone comes so hte servers won't get hammered. Either way, it's within a month.

@lariosme - GPS is a physical thing in the 3G iPhone that the 1st Gen doesn't have, so the 2.0 software won't add GPS support to the 1st Gen.
@subgenius/vandy1997 - The App Store will act like the wireless music store on the iPhone/iPod Touch. When you buy an application on the iPhone, it will sync to iTunes, so you will have it on your computer. This means if you need to swap phones, it will be able to sync to your new phone. see http://www.apple.com/iphone/appstore/
@drpower - applications that exist at current for jailbroken phones aren't big, with the largest coming in at a few Megabytes. 8 gigs should be plenty.

My question is:
With the App store starting in July (or June 27 maybe) - what is the future (if any) of Web-Apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch?
I have several home screens filled with Web Apps on my iPhone. I'm thinking that some of them I'd rather keep as Web Apps - since 8 and 16 GB iPhones can only hold so much....
Will Web Apps go "poof" in favor of App Store versions? Will anyone be able to really store that many apps on their iPhones?

Don't worry, these apps should not be too big. The actual executable is normally only a few kilobytes and the images in the Application, well, depends, but the full iPod Application (with everything, executable, images...) is about 1MB, so you don't have to worry too much about drive space.
