Firefox 3 release date announced: June 17
Mozilla announced Wednesday that it plans to release the final version of Firefox 3 on Tuesday, June 17, less than a week away.
"After more than 34 months of active development, and with the contributions of thousands, we're proud to announce that we're ready," Mozilla said in a post on its Developer Center blog.
You can help Mozilla meet its goal of breaking the Guinness World Record on June 17th, becoming the most downloaded software in a single day. Over one million people have pledged so far to download the software in the first 24 hours it's available.
In related news, Mozilla also published Firefox 3 Release Candidate 3 on Wednesday. There was one fix, and it was for Mac users on 10.5.3 -- a correction for unkillable hangs related to the VerifiedDownload plugin. Glad they got that cleared up!

I just hope that my extensions still work after I help them break this download record.

As much as I would LOVE to download FF3 on the release day, I find myself heavily relying on a lot of web development plugins that probably wont work on FF3 right away until it is developed for it and is stable, but I cannot wait to use it. Still my favorite browser to date.

@Robert: Lol, silly editors. When I saw that, I was a bit surprised, because I thought you wouldn't make that mistake. Makes sense now :)

@Dustin:
Ive been using Firefox 3 since beta stage, and I can confirm that these web development tools work great:
-Web Developer Toolbar
-FireBug
-ColorZilla
-MeasureIt
-Tamper Data
Unfortunately SWAT has yet to release a new version, but I was working with RC2, and I am sure there will be an update out soon. Let me know about any other plugs and I will let you know if they work too. This browser is great!

YOU DO NOT DIRECTLY LINK TO BUGZILLA FROM MAJOR WEBSITES
IT IS NOT WHAT YOU DO
All links from slashdot to bugzilla are blocked because it is too much traffic. Please respect that.

Hey Robert,
I think what he meant to say is, "Please kindly remove the bugzilla link due to bandwidth needs. Thanks, Tom"
and yes, as a rule it would be better to link to the release notes. ;)
Robert Palmer said 12:44AM on 6-12-2008
In my defense, that sentence, including the link, was added by an editor after I submitted the article. :)
I have removed the link.

Thanks for removing it. Now to fix the reply threading, and fix the little 'comment' link in e-mails that link straight to the comment but don't work for some reason

TUAW has editors??

This is awesome, can't wait. Hopefully they've fixed up the bugs in RC2 though... I'm still using RC1 because I've heard bad things about it.
You've come a long way, Firefox, I've been using it on Windows since before it was even 1.0. Congrats Mozilla!

This will coincide nicely with Sweden voting yes to the new law that makes the stat bug and listen in on ALL DIGITAL CONVERSATIONS. Bloody Big Brother state this is now...

Why did it take 34 months to develop?

Because they're not Microsoft, and they want to release a product that isn't a piece of garbage.
Would you prefer to download something that worked, or something that was shoddily put together & rushed through the RCs full of bugs?

Heh..... this is funny. I am running firefox 3RC3 so this just seems kind of shalow
but I can see what all the buzz is about!

As an FYI to all Mac Users of Firefox 3... OS level keyboard shortcuts don't work with FF3 as of RC1 and RC2. See bug 429824 on the mozilla bugzilla for details...
If anyone has an extension that will work around this issue, or let me define my own keyboard shortcuts in FF, I'd love to know about it as I heavily depend on the keyboard shortcuts that I have set up...
This is the only chink in the armor as far as I'm concerned. The betas and RCs have been stable, fast, and have alotta nice features.

i know its petty, but for some reason it drives me batty that i can't just single click the website icon in the location bar to highlight all the text, anymore. i am an unsafe rebel and don't care about the security credentials stuff that comes up in its place :P

I thought I was the only one! That "feature" annoys me enough to resort to only using it on windows, when I have to.

I'm wondering if its just my work computer, but does TUAW suffer from the jerky page scrolling for anyone else using Windows XP and Firefox (RC2 or RC3)? Yeah yeah, i know im using windows on a mac blog, but i dont have a choice with my company laptop
