Darwine 1.0
Firefox 3 was a pretty historic release this week, but I'd say that Wine 1.0 might actually beat it -- the open source non-emulator (Wine, after all, Is Not an Emulator) for Windows finally reached their first stable release. And Darwine, the OS X-rated version of Wine, also got a shiny 1.0 designation as well. It still won't work exactly perfectly (you've got to have XQuartz installed, and as with all emulators, there are so many different systems trying to talk to each other that you're bound to run into problems when one of them wants to do something complicated), but for standard Windows apps (Solitare and Spider Solitaire, we're told, work beautifully), it'll do ya.Of course, we have no idea why you'd want to run anything Windows (ahem), but we won't judge. It's your computer: do what you like.
Thanks, Luigi193!

Mind you, having IE available to test how web sites look or for OWA is handy.

I am sure hoping they can get Age of Empires 2 + conquerers working in wine. Thats the only windows app I would want to run on my mac. In the meantime, Myth II will have to treat my gaming itch.

I hope they get the Age of Empires slowness quirks out. That is the only windows app I want to run. I guess Myth II will have to do for awhile longer.
P.S Sorry if this is a double post.

No luck getting starcraft map editor working. Oh well. VMware FTW!

The vast majority of windows apps work, at least mostly under WINE now. Simple apps and popular apps generally work perfectly, along with most games...

I've no idea what is meant by "and as with all emulators, there are so many different systems trying to talk to each other that you're bound to run into problems when one of them wants to do something complicated"
And of course, WINE Is Not an Emulator.

I clicked on the "Read" link, and only the 0.97 binaries are available, currently. It's about 8:45PM EDT on 6/19/08.

Still, there are MANY ways to do Win programs on Intel macs, but nothing really for PPC systems (still quite a few of them out there) except old copies of Virtual PC.
And no reasonably priced replacements for flexible systems like the PowerMac G4 dual, Mac Mini isn't flexible and the MAC Pro ($2800 and up) isn't reasonable yet ...
Ah well ....

How about downloading Darwine?
It works on PowerPC.
Heather said 5:56AM on 6-21-2008
According to the wiki ...
Currently the Darwine project is dead, most of the development having been folded into Wine.

How is this any different than Crossover?
Hasn't CodeWeavers been offering a GUI'd version of this for years?

This is free, this is what crossover is based on, and this came before crossover. It's just announcing the new version, 1.0 so it's not beta anymore.

No need for xquartz.

XQuartz is just an updated version of X11. Even the kronenberg builds require X11.

I've downloaded several different things in the past hour trying to get this thing to run. Can anyone offer any help or advice? All I need to be able to do is run a fairly new version of IE, whether it be 6 or 7. Is this doable? I'm on a Mac Pro 10.5.3.
I already downloaded Darwine 1.0 and that seems to work... but the IE that comes in the Program Files folder doesn't really work. Please help!
