TimesOnline: Why you'll be paying a lot for iPhone 3G roaming
Remember when the first generation iPhone was released and people found themselves traveling overseas only to return to a large bill from AT&T? Well, TimesOnline is weighing in on the possible problems of data roaming and the iPhone 3G. As it turns out, 3G bandwidth is, shall we say, expensive. TimesOnline said O2's (Apple's iPhone carrier in the UK) 3G data roaming charges go up to almost £3 (~ $6 US) per megabyte when downloaded from a country within the EU; worldwide roaming is almost £6 (~ $12 US) per Mb.
So, to put things into perspective, if you go overseas and download a 50MB file via your phone (such as audio or a short movie) then you will be spending over $600 US for that file. TUAW would like to take a moment and remind everyone about the Data Roaming Off switch in your settings. This can save you an expensive mistake (i.e. having to sell your kidney to pay your iPhone's roaming bill).

...because the iphone is the only phone with where 3g roaming would be an issue

June 23 2008 at 5:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHaving visited Canada last month and expected the roaming for basic e-mail and Google Maps functionality to be somewhat reasonable, I was shocked to get the call from AT&T kindly letting me know that the international roaming charge would be in excess of $1000 if I didn't switch to their international roaming plan immediately.

June 23 2008 at 12:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat about roaming in Canada and vice-versa? Can anyone chime in on US residents visiting Canada and paying for data roaming. I live in Canada, and can almost guarantee you that using your phone in the US is the equivalen of getting ass-raped. Mind you, we are used to it already from the current ridiculous cell phone costs.
June 23 2008 at 11:47 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply...just thinking, if Apple would let an iPhone-App be available through AppStore, which switches Data Roaming Off and On automatically, when signing in/out of another Mobile-Carrier...
...or based on GPS...
In the UK, which this article applies to, it's actually a lot cheaper to own and run the iphone 2 vs the iphone 1. You do get SMS on all the plans and even the roaming is somewhat cheaper than it was previously.
This is all well and good, but the questons remains: with the international nature of the Internet, why do wireless voice/data plans cost so much when roaming internationally? Does it really cost AT&T that much extra per minute to bill me for roaming around in other countries? Does it really cost the local wireless provider that much more to stick my data packets on the Internet than a local user?
Given that billing is largely automated, I would think that the cost increases are negligible. However, I think the answer to the question is simply: because users will pay it.
I don't think it costs more to handle the calls, especially since Internet traffic to overseas Web sites and international email doesn't cost extra. (I shouldn't have said that, since it will give the telecos another bad idea.)
Consider this: I bought a prepaid SIM in Australia once while traveling on business. A local call cost US$0.40/minute. Calling back to the US costs $0.25/minute. Yes, you read that right; it cost more to call locally than internationally.
Now, given that, how can you tell me with a straight face that international calls are more expensive to process?
In the EU now there are mandatory caps on roaming charges that apply to voice, following years of the industry whining about self regulation and utterly failing to do so. Unfortunately these don't apply to data, so it's not uncommon to pay £10 per megabyte with some carriers - a case of blatant profiteering.
Roaming Cost in are billed from the international carrier, you use in other countries.
He bills your local provider, which transfers the costs right into your hands.
Every provider can choose, how much he bills the international carrier for there users minutes and data - thats the reason, why data roaming costs are so off the charts.
Momentarily the EU-Government here in Europe have asked the european providers in an open letter to lower the data prices. The provider can have time until July to do it themselve.
Otherwise the EU-Government is going to force a data roaming price limit for all countrys in the EU.
So good for us consumers in the old kontinent.
Feels good to be in a huge country like India. Data roaming is non existant, everything is the same everywhere. And subscription rates for EDGE (no 3G yet) is $10 per month! :)
June 23 2008 at 6:42 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's quite irrelevant. Data charges in roaming within the UK are also non existant.
June 23 2008 at 9:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOK so probably a really dumb question but if you use AT&T in the states you can't just put a T-mobile SIM card in when in Europe unless the phone is unlocked correct?
I have a Blackberry my company pays for overseas but I'd rather just take the SIM out and use on the iphone 3g here.
No, you can't swap SIM cards. Apple has locked the iPhone down such that if you swap them it ceases to function. Yes, it's rather hard to believe but that's how the first one worked so it's likely that's how this one will work. At least the U.S. versions. Perhaps the ones sold worldwide will be less restrictive? Or perhaps they are not so locked down to the SIM card and that is why AT&T is requiring a 2 year contract at time of sale?
