iPhone 2.0 firmware goes golden master
Gizmodo and GearLive are reporting that the iPhone 2.0 firmware will go golden master (locked for shipping) this week. Golden master does not necessarily mean that Apple will ship the firmware this week (after all, Steve said that it would ship in "early July") but it does mean that the firmware and all the features are complete and ready to head out the door. Both sites seem to agree with the build number on the new firmware: 345. Gizmodo is reporting that 2.0 will boast code signing and a new encryption feature. The iPhone firmware 2.0 is definitely something on every iPhone owner's wishlist, and here's mine (you have one of these, right?):
- Super Monkey Ball (AppStore)
- New Mail features
- iWork support in Mail
- Exchange support
- MobileMe support
- Super Monkey Ball (did I mention this one already?)
- Scientific Calculator (would it be too hard to add a graphing calculator? c'mon, Apple!)

I'm hoping for a good e-book reader in the App Store.

I'm hoping for ebook, and a more advanced calculator like a graphing calculator.
Oh and games of course. :D

Honestly, I can't wait for the bulk move/delete. I won't use it that often, but for some reason I was extremely impressed with it during the Stevenote. Don't really know why.

MMS and Copy/Paste
How $UCKING hard is it Apple?!
You can put doo dads in there that tell which way the device is tilted, but scratch your a$$ when it comes to staples like mms and copy/paste...LAME.
....I'll still buy one though ;)

My thoughts exactly! These two are basic functions on all other (smart) phones! Sheesh!
I'll just add two others to that list:
* Landscape functionality everywhere (that makes sense) - apps that are keyboard heavy (i.e. notes, mail, etc.)
* TODO functionality built into iCal (Calendar app)

While the lack of cut/copy/paste confuses me too, I have a theory about the lack of MMS: appeasement of record label and film studio partners.
Apple has contracts with content providers for the iTunes store. It would not surprise me at all if those partners used their leverage within the iTunes Store as a way to keep users of using the iPhone (with its INSANELY easy UI and multimedia capabilities) from sending copyrighted material, even small bits of material. They see this as almost as big offense as P2P file sharing. Of course, with the Fairplay DRM that Apple has on most content from the Apple store, there's little chance that they are concerned about that content being shared, but I'm sure the labels/studios do not want Apple to play ANY part in the potential sharing of copyrighted material (songs ripped from CDs, videos, etc.).
Maybe the labels/studios even negotiated this, or maybe Apple conceded this in an effort to maintain good relationships with their content providers. Either way, that seems to be the most likely explanation as to why MMS is not included on the iPhone, despite the fact that most people use MMS to send personal content (but labels/studios don't care about this; they are paranoid and see only the potential for misuse).

LOL... yep and Apple still ignores the corporate business user who needs this the most.

Actually, the music/video iPod partition is sandboxed off from the SDK so even if a developer were to write an MMS application, there wouldn't be any file access.
More likely, just like dropping the floppy drive, Apple feels MMS is outdated. I tend to agree. I don't know why people are so eager to pay extra per message when e-mail is free.

Why can't we have a vertical keyboard. The keys would be twice as big. Please, tell me why.

You mean horizontal, and I thoroughly agree. This is the main thing I want when I finally get my hands on an iPhone 3G next month.
Kelly said 12:54PM on 6-26-2008
Sorry, right, horizontal, what is the big deal? I think this would bring over so many blackberry users.

Landscape (horizontal) keypad entry on ALL apps (not just URL entry) has been the most absent feature since the iPhone's introduction.

A graphing calculator would be really handy; say you're in a tough bind and you need to know a trajectory rate - BAM! iPhone saves the day ;)
Seriously though, you'd think they could port some of Grapher onto the iPhone. Maybe in 2.1...

What is this "Golden Master" for "shipping" business? It's not like they have to ship a disc, just drag the image to the update servers NOW Apple. I want it like a fat kid wants cake.

You have to give the developers a chance to recompile on the new system (I presume there will be a final SDK to go with it) and test it. 11 days is actually quite tight to fully test an app on a new environment.

I'm actually very interested in the Netter's Anatomy app that was shown during the Keynote. It will be a great help being able to utilize every spare minute to study during commutes etc.
