iTunes 7.7 to include remote control capabilities?
Along with the new iPhone SDK 8 beta that came out tonight, Apple also shipped a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 to developers in the iPhone Dev Program. iTunes 7.7 is a requirement for the new iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 firmware; it also appears to include a new remote control feature. According to an anonymous tipster, iTunes 7.7 will allow either an iPhone or iPod touch to download a free application that can remote control iTunes from anywhere in the vicinity of your Mac (most likely over your home network). Reportedly, this free application will be available in the App Store upon the 2.0 firmware release.
As we cannot confirm nor deny this tip, take it with a grain of salt until we get official word from Apple. However, as you may recall, we hinted about this capability a while back.
Thanks, (redacted)!

Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home -- a free download from the App Store.
That is located inside the iTunes Read Me Section of the new seed of the SDK in the itunes part

While not as awesome as full AirTunes support on iPhone, and also basically a carbon copy of what RemoteBuddy already does... this is still pretty cool (and will probably work better than RemoteBuddy).
Seriously Apple, my iPhone is connected to my AirPort Express. Why the heck can't I stream music from my iPhone directly to my stereo? This would be such a killer feature. No need for a speaker dock! The controls would be right in your hand the whole time!

Apple is all about battery life, that's why. (from what I can tell at least)

Bah! I just bought an Apple Remote since my new MBP didn't come with one, which is stupid since it's $20 for the remote and $2000 for the laptop...they can't include the stupid remote?

So you paid $2000 for a laptop, but you're complaining about the extra $20 for a remote? You should set a reminder in iCal to complain once every two years about the price of the battery.

.. or maybe if he spends over $2000 for a laptop he doesn't expect to be nickel and dimed for a remote that Apple used to include in the package. Just a thought.

Exactly kleinias. It used to be included. I'd understand if you'd have to buy it seperately for a mac mini or base macbook, but the pro line?

It's not even from a tipster, it's from the readme file inside the iTunes 7.7 beta.

Great! Now when is Apple going to update the Mac mini and give us a computer to really make use of this?

The Mac mini is incapable of running iTunes?

This is awesome! I lost the Apple Remote to my iMac a few weeks ago and was debating getting a new one. Since I am definitely getting the new iPhone in 2 weeks, it looks like I don't have to; I just have to do without a remote until then. Awesome!

That's all well and good, but it still doesn't make iTunes work with FrontRow again...

Hear, hear!

Third this: Not being able to stream to airtunes from FrontRow is dumb, especially since the old version would do it happily. I know I can install the old version over the top and use it, but that's just a pain - make it work again!

what would also be a nice feature is to use it as a remote for Keynote as well.
