iTunes 7.7 to include remote control capabilities?
Along with the new iPhone SDK 8 beta that came out tonight, Apple also shipped a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 to developers in the iPhone Dev Program. iTunes 7.7 is a requirement for the new iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 firmware; it also appears to include a new remote control feature. According to an anonymous tipster, iTunes 7.7 will allow either an iPhone or iPod touch to download a free application that can remote control iTunes from anywhere in the vicinity of your Mac (most likely over your home network). Reportedly, this free application will be available in the App Store upon the 2.0 firmware release.
As we cannot confirm nor deny this tip, take it with a grain of salt until we get official word from Apple. However, as you may recall, we hinted about this capability a while back.
Thanks, (redacted)!

Remote Buddy is pretty good, but it's expensive at $35. I bought it anyway, and it does way more than just control iTunes. It's also incredibly sluggish, but it works.
I'm hoping that either this native app from Apple, or (hopefully) a forthcoming native app for Remote Buddy will solve my sluggishness problem.
Cool. Then we could control iTunes in the den while listening to the speakers on the deck. All the remote controls I looked at sucked in one way or another.

It will be a great addition to my Airport Express. Woo Hoo! I simply cannot wait for July 11th! As stated by Jash above: Leopard 10.5.4, iPhone 3G, 2.0 Firmware, App store, iTunes 7.7, WOO HOO!

I know iPhone doesn't have any sort of IR sensor, but if its using WIFI to control iTunes on your computer, then why not use WIFI to control your AppleTV (which has WIFI built in)... anyone?....

I'm just waiting for July 11th !
- Leopard 10.5.4
- iPhone 3G
- New 2.0 Firmware
- Pwnage Tool 1.2 :D
- iTunes 7.7
- AND HEY! How can I forget the AppStore.... :)
This combined by a good set of speakers/mac mini/airtunes would probably give Sonos real competition. Imagine being able to control all the music/video around your home using your phone/ipod. Just makes sense.
Certainly adds value to your iPhone when you consider how much some of those fancy new remote controls are.
That was the first thing that came to my mind: "Sonos killer".

@18; it would be quite likely you'd be using your iPhone for media if you happen to only happen to have an 8-16GB music and video collection over you're computer; however, a lot of people like myself probably only stick around 4GB of music and a handful of videos on their iPod and simply cycle out the music depending on how your preferences are leaning because of the size of your collection (i have somewhere in the ballpark of 40-50GB of music, and probably close to 20GB of videos). most of this will be on your computer because it has a much larger HDD, and a way to control that from across the room would be a massive boon i think. ;)
this will probably also interface with the AppleTV i'm sure, that would most certainly be a smart move on Apple's part to cover all their bases.
as for Windows... well, it all comes down to if this is going to interface with iTunes itself or FrontRow. if it's the former, i wouldn't imagine anything barring Windows users from having the same functionality other than hardware. the latter will pose a problem though. :P
i'm definitely interested to see how this is going to be applied, it could be handy...
