Original iPhone warranties about to expire
Do you hear that ticking noise? It's your iPhone's warranty preparing to go "boom." If you purchased your iPhone on the original US release date -- June 29, 2007 -- your warranty will expire in three days (as of this writing) on June 29th, 2008. Tick, tick.
Of course, you can extend coverage by purchasing AppleCare for the iPhone at $69.95US (or toss in an additional $129 for iPhone 3G). Otherwise, get yourself to an Apple Store Genius Bar ASAP!
If the iPhone is anything like most cars I've owned, everything will go wrong the very day after the warranty expires. I'm just saying.

Well, I am now 3 days out of warranty and suddenly I get an unresponsive screen (the SMS spacebar issue). Wonderful. What are the odds I take it into the Genius bar and they don't notice that little detail? :/
July 03 2008 at 1:25 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI bought my iPhone in September and ordered AppleCare with it. One of the external speakers stopped working and I've been toying with the idea of waiting until July 11 to take the iPhone in and ask for a 3G replacement. Do you think they'll honor it or will insist on replacing my 2G iPhone with another 2G iPhone?
June 30 2008 at 3:07 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTake your pick folks. My receipt says the warranty expires the 27th. The applecare pitch says within a year - June 29th. Apple's serial-number warranty lookup says I have till July 2nd.
When does it expire? Who the hell knows!
Thank you TUAW & Dave Caolo. As a direct result of this post, I took my iPhone in to the Apple Store to finally get some answers on why it was not connecting to Wifi, and why it thought my Apple Bluetooth dock was a non-approved iPhone device.
Walked in with problems and a scratched, nearly 1 year old iPhone, walked out with a brand new refurbished iPhone!
TUAW - thanks for this reminder! Timely and valuable.
I'm actually going to grab AppleCare for my original day iPhone for four reasons:
1) keeping original phone longer than I intended
2) resale value
3) gift protection
4) battery
Details on each of those reasons and the logic behind them on my blog if you're interested: http://thedigitaldive.net/blog/?p=62
With my iDay iPhone always in my pocket or charging on my MBP, always loved and cared for and in a case, I've had five (yep, 5) different iPhones. All hardware issues, including the Home button going bad and the bottom third of the screen going 'deaf'.
I love my iPhone, and all it lets me do, but damn!
My Newtons were rock-solid, and with me at least as much of the time. I'm really torn on the AppleCare extension. I'm planning on handing this to one of the kids and moving to either the 3G or the one after that, with the videocamera in the front, like I really want...
"This":http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nplm=MB135LL/A appears to be the link to the AppleCare plan for iPhone. Coverage is only extended 1 year. The link in the article might lead one to think it's extended for two years.

Ha. You have a vivid imagination. Better check into this between now and 6/29 so you can acutally buy AppleCare.
I'm obviously confused. I thought apple care was in effect from 1 year of the date of purchase. If he bought an iphone around october, does he not have until october to worry about apple care? Why does this June 29th Stuff apply to someone who didnt buy an iphone on Jue 29th?
June 26 2008 at 11:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWait a minute. I just thought of something...
They stopped producing the old iPhone completely right? So what happens when they don't have enough old gen iPhone to replace your broken one with? Will they upgrade you to the new 3G iPhone?
I mean granted that might take a while to happen, but think about it...
This is basically what I was asking, and from they have told me it seems that they do have a vast amount of old gen iphones to dispose to those who need replacements. However, are they going to have replacements in like a year from now? The reason I asked is because my roomate is basically waiting to get his old iphone replaced, which is 100 percent going to happen. His hopes were if he waited a few months after 3G was released, that they would no longer have 1st gen iphones, and would replace his 400 dollar phone with the new 200 dollar phone.
June 26 2008 at 11:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf they replaced it with a 3G how would they deal with the difference in AT&T contracts? Force you to pay at least $10 more per month just because your under warranty iPhone broke? Limit your new phone to EDGE connection?
June 26 2008 at 11:49 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've asked this before, to no avail, and I'll ask it again. If I bought an iPhone around late august, and the phone is quite distinctly broken (An entire row of dead touchscreen area), I have an entire year from date of purchase to get it replaced. If I wait until a few weeks after the 3G is released, and have them replace my old iphone, would they have like some large supply of old refurbs to hand out for that? OR by some lucky chance would they just up me to the 3G? Any Ideas?
