Google Talk for the iPhone
Google has just announced Google Talk for the iPhone (and iPod touch). You won't have to wait for the App Store to use it, since this is a web app designed for the iPhone's browser (remember when Apple wanted us to believe that web apps were just as good as fully native apps? My how times have changed). All you have to do is point your iPhone to www.google.com/talk and soon you'll be chatting away with your Gmail contacts. Since this is a web app, Google Talk for the iPhone only works when it is the active window in Mobile Safari. Close the web broswer, or switch to a different window and you'll show up as unavailable in Google Talk.

roll on september to the availability of the notification system.
With that in mind - is it worth signing up to MobileMe with the basis of push email, or would you hold off until the push notifications became available for third-parties and then hope gmail provide a push option?

I missed that - where was the date of September mentioned for the delivery of the notification system?

I wonder what a drain it is on battery life, the activity indicator is running non-stop, it must be refreshing constantly because you get messages right away.

If your iPhone is unlocked just use the new Agile Messenger. Has AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber and I think more. Great interface too! Crashed on me once or twice, but its a very nice app.

Fring rocks.... Been using it on my jailbroken phone for a month now and it totally is the best IM solution out there I've seen. Lets you do VoIP over WiFi and it lets u chat with ur google talk people as well. Also, Skype, Yahoo, MSN, AIM, etc. They should probably do a notification one in the AppStore sometime later.

My favorite of the web apps for AIM/Yahoo/ICQ/Jabber/GoogleTalk/MSN/ is BeeJive.. it's a free to use web app for the iPhone/iPod Touch. They also have commercial apps for Blackberry and WinMo phohes.
I've tried Meebo and was underwhelmed by it.
