iPhone app submission deadline: July 7th

We've been receiving tips all day about an e-mail some iPhone developers got from Apple today. In the e-mail, Apple is asking developers to submit their iPhone applications to the AppStore in order to be available for the iPhone 2.0 firmware / iPhone 3G launch. The deadline? July 7th ... as in this coming Monday.

World of Apple received a screenshot of the e-mail which reads, "To ensure your application can be considered for the exciting launch of the App Store, submit your application by 12 PM PDT, on July 7, 2008. We will continue to accept applications after this time, however your application may not be available until after the launch of the App Store"

So, for all the iPhone developers out there: get your apps out by July 7th (especially for the Twitterrific and Super Monkey Ball folks).

I dont really know what apple have in mind but I did buy an iPod touch just for development and I would like to buy the SDK too, we develop games and would love to work on this new platform, but for some odd reason Apple wont gimme a developer certificate though I have a genuine Apple product and I would love to develop apps on it, Just because I am not in the US and dont use a AT&T phone doesnt mean that I cant program my iPod touch!

This is really frustrating!

I'm certain they've already received hundreds of applications and the cream of the crop is in place. The AppStore has to make a gigantic splash so they'll be careful of what they'll allow at this point in time. Best to have 200+ great applications, then hundreds or thousands of crappy apps. Quality over quantity. I can't wait for the AppStore.

Will they start free memberships for freeware developers ?

Bec. no one can afford to pay $99 for membership and distribute freeware apps !

Unless the freeware app they are developing is a piece of crap that requires essentially no time to build, then they certainly can afford $99. I mean, with the time a developer is using to build a free app, he or she could certainly be doing something that paid considerably more than $99, so they've already invested way more than that in their effort of generosity or whatever it is that motivates them.

I wonder if there will be a flurry of apps coming in just before the noon deadline. Assuming (which may not be safe) a noon go live time for the AppStore on July 11, that's only 96 hours.

I think there's several interesting points here: If Apple assumes there won't be too many submissions, then 96 hours seems like plenty of time. If there are hundreds of submissions, does that mean Apple won't be doing too much review before making apps available (could be good or bad) or that they have the manpower to spend the right amount of time banging on a pile of apps to keep the crap out. Given their interest in user experience, I'm thinking it might be the latter.

I hope Apple doesn't start letting less than perfect apps through. I'd rather not have the store filled with junk from the get go.

That's what ratings are for. Hopefully, Apple will let you filter out the crud.
