5th Avenue Apple Store starts iPhone 3G line
GearDiary is reporting that a lineup of about 10 people started queuing up Friday for the iPhone 3G launch at the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York. You may recall last year's 5th Avenue store queuing started about a week early as well. The iPhone 3G goes on sale at 8 a.m. on July 11th. The first people in line are a man, his wife and their young child. According to GearDiary, the couple told security that they're trying to set a record for time waiting in line and possibly having a baby waiting with them. Police are allowing the 10 people to wait in line and currently have no plans to use barricades.
GearDiary has posted some pictures for your viewing pleasure.
Update: Engadget, our sister blog, has posted more pictures and an exclusive interview with the people in line.

Why? The lines were futile last time. Do you really think waiting in line is necessary for the 3G launch? Doubtful.

They're probably hoping that they'll get *something* for their devotion.
There just doesn't seem to be the same level of hype as the first iPhone launch. And with the world wide launch being on the same day, the time zone thing makes it a little less special for us here in the States.
Still... pretty phenomenal amount of attention and anticipation for a phone.

Why? Because it's the only way they'll ever get to be in the news without committing a crime.

As many iPhones as were available at launch last Summer do these people really believe Apple won't have some idea of a demand curve this time around?

What, for taking their baby camping? They’re even within 1.3 miles of a hospital, and *no dingos*!

You realize that, after the apocalypse, when alien archaeologists unearth the hard drive that will define humanity for civilizations to come, it's crap like this that will make us the laughingstock of the future universe.
This, and the fact that the internet will appear to be comprised solely of porn and cats.

That's OK. All the aliens I know are totally in to cat porn.

It's funny most of us are pretty negative about the line while I consider most of the TUAW readers are loyal mac fans.
I have to admit, I did get in line last year, but that was on the launch day at 3pm (only 3 hrs ahead).
This year, I am planning on rolling into the Apple Store to get a iPhone 3G on the 12th as well...

I was expecting them to start sooner. lol I doubt there is any need to line up. I'm heading to my ATT store around 8am on Friday.

Are they selling the phones in the Apple Store ? I thought it was into your local AT&T or o2 store to sign up...

Aren't you limited to one per person (Or is that just here in the UK)? If so, some of them (at least) clearly aren't interested in the device if they want to give up their phone for a presidential candidate.

No, no, no, it's just a new "tradition". Maybe they're gonna be there for the next iPhone release or something. Humans like traditions, they makes wars for traditions.
In this case, even if it's totally dumb, they're not looking for trouble but for a (great) gadget in peace, so it's just funny.
