Apple's retail chief on iPhone activations
Worried that you might be spending a lot of time waiting for that shiny new iPhone 3G to be activated? Well, never fear because the nice people at the Apple Store are there to help you. Bloomberg.com interviewed Apple's retail chief, Ron Johnson, about the iPhone retail activation process. "Apple stores will handle about 30 customers at a time. While the company will make sure the activation process is quick," said Johnson about the activation time.
Johnson then went on to say that Apple will spend as much time as needed to make sure that the customer is happy with their purchase. You can read the full interview on the Bloomberg website.

I have verizon, anyone know what the PIN number is or where I can find it or if it exists?
Also, does the account holder need to be present?

Unfortunately there is an AT&T store much closer to where I live than the nearest Apple Store, so we'll have to see how things go there come Friday morning.

Knowing my situation.... it's going to take pretty long... wish they would just release more details to clarify so many questions that like almost answered, but not quite... like discounts and such....

Your PIN is usually your online password for that number and if the telephone number has admin access on the account they should not have any issues. If they are not I would have any account admin present.

Where did you hear/see this? The reason I ask is seemingly you could port a number from home with the last iPhone which would mean no one would need to see the account holder, and I really can't lug my dad out to an Apple store at 8am Friday.

I remember reading somewhere last week that it was rumored that
current AT&T users with a phone other than the iPhone and who are NOT
eligible for an upgrade will have to go to the AT&T store to get their
iPhone 3G at the $399/$499 price point.
Is this the case for real? I'd much rather go to the Apple store to
get mine, even though the AT&T store is closer to me. (I'm also
afraid my AT&T store won't have many units in stock).

I'd really like to know this as I'm in that situation and was also planning to go to an Apple Store. I hadn't heard anything about it before.
