Legends ebook service for iPhone and iPod touch
While it's not a replacement for the Amazon Kindle, ZappTek today announced Legends, an ebook service for iPhone and iPod touch. The Legends service will be available in the App Store on July 11th, with pricing of $1.99 for short stories and $4.99 for novels.ZappTek plans on partnering with "today's hottest writers" to distribute new fiction using Legends to bring the reading experience to iPhone / iPod Touch 2.0. Each book appears as an icon on the Home screen, and the books automatically re-open to the last page you were reading. You can also bookmark or annotate any page.
Both landscape and portrait reading modes are available by rotating the iPhone, and you can invert the display (white characters on black background) by triple-tapping. Double-tapping zooms in on text.
To start off, ZappTek is making a number of short stories and novels by New York Times bestselling author Michael A. Stackpole available. Many other authors will be joining Legends soon.
If you're a voracious reader, be sure to try out Legends this Friday!

Why on earth WOULDN'T Amazon make a Kindle client? All these solutions fail in that they have very small amounts of available books, or large collections of older books. Kindle has affordable best seller and a huge library, plus magazines. Unless they really think the money is in the hardware, they should keep offering Kindle for those who want a full size reader, and make an iPhone client for the other few million of us.

Looks pretty good. Is anyone making a PDF reader that will allow bookmarks and notes for PDF's? I'm playing with WildEyes but it is missing that functionality. Easy transfer between my desktop and the iPhone would be ideal. And syncing of notes with Skim or Preview would be wonderful.

July 08 2008 at 1:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI wish someone would make an ebook reader that not only would be able to do jpg's too, but use the little magnifying glass instead of zooming (as a preference) for instance, while reading manga, the artwork is almost part of the text, so you want to read the text, and see the artwork at the same time, which is kind of hard when your constantly zooming in and out.
and for some reason syncing larger photos to the iphone "optimizes" (read: makes very shitty) them no matter what.
I listen to audiobooks on my iPhone mainly but anything that gets people reading wins my vote.

I wonder how can people read books on it !!!
I read ebooks on my old Fokia E65 whose screen is a bit on the smallish side.
Having a couple of ebooks for long tube rides, doctors appointments and such is very good to have.
It's also practical for reading in bed when your partner wants to sleep and is bothered by the light.
