Want to buy an iPhone in Canada? Don't go to an Apple store (Updated)

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple won't be selling the iPhone 3G in its 6 Canadian retail stores this Friday. This seems to be confirmed by Apple Canada's 'Where to buy an iPhone' webpage which lists Rogers and Fido stores as the only locations to buy an iPhone (the same page in the States lists both Apple stores and AT&T stores) in Canada.
Is this a reaction to Rogers less than stellar iPhone rate plans? That doesn't seem to ring true to me, since it strikes me as unlikley that Apple was surprised by what Rogers planned to charge for iPhone plans. I'm sure it is only a matter of time before you'll be able to stroll into a Canadian Apple Store and plunk down your money for an iPhone 3G.
Update: I miscounted, there are 6 Apple stores in Canada.
Update 2: Looks like this is just a tempest in a teapot. After looking at the iPhone pages for countries where Apple has retails stores (UK, Japan, Italy, and Australia) it looks like you won't be able to buy an iPhone in any non-US Apple Stores. Everyone can stop freaking out now.

actually mac break weekly worked out that if you get the US subsidised phone and pay the fee to break contract, it's cheaper than buying the non-contract phone

Anyone know whether I can sign up for an iPhone plan without buying the iPhone from Rogers? (i.e. I went to AT&T in the States and bought it at their 'unlocked' price, could I bring it back and sign up for a plan?)
When you buy the iPhone outright in the US for $599 US or $699 US, it is NOT unlocked!! It is locked to the AT&T network. You can ONLY use it on the AT&T network. You cannot use a SIM from another carrier.
You must UNLOCK and JAILBREAK the phone yourself (which will be clearly illegal in Canada once the Government passes the Canadian equivalent of the US DMCA).
Also note that it is NOT known how easy it is the jailbreak and unlock a 3G iPhone.
The $599 and $699 iPhone are really "contract free" iPhones. Not unlocked iPhones.
> Everyone can stop freaking out now.
Little chance of that happening. The online panic, sturm and drang over iphone's launch in Canada has been utterly comical. You'd think the rumor was that drinking water was about to run out. Which is true - pass it on.
Due to all the BAD PR surrounding the crazy rates for the iPhone in Canada (and the long 3 year contract!) being offered by Rogers, Bell Canada is introducing the Samsung Instinct with a reasonable UNLIMITED Data Plan.
Yes, there are reasonable unlimited data plans available in Canada. It is a pity that Rogers will not be offering one with the iPhone.
My advice. Boycott the iPhone in Canada. If enough people do, Rogers will be forced to change their cell phone plans.

umm... that's HMCS Rogers in Canada
July 08 2008 at 6:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCorrect.... As far as I can tell, Apple never planned to sell the iPhone in Canada at any Apple Retail Stores.
Further, Apple specifically and directly told Tod Maffin of CBC back on or before June 27th that the iPhone would not be sold in Apple Retail Stores (see http://todmaffin.com/iphonerumours).
There's nothing new here. Not that I blame TUAW for reporting it... I'm more annoyed by the sensationalist rumour-mongering of other sites.
With regards to Rogers' data rates, they're not that bad when compared to any country other than the U.S. Unfortunately, it's a typically Canadian response to incessantly compare ourselves to our nearest neighbour. However, if Apple is so ticked at Rogers for their rates, they should be expressing similar anger toward the carriers in New Zealand, Mexico, Portugal, and Germany, just to name a few. All of these countries have iPhone plans that are just as bad, if not worse, than Rogers', even after you factor in cost of living and exchange rates.
In reality, Rogers just made completely unprecedented price drops in their data plans. Four short weeks ago, I was paying $100 per month for 200MB of data. Now, I can either get 6GB of data for the same price, or drop my plan to $30/month for 300MB of data. This is about a 500% price drop in their base data rate. Rogers has never in my entire history with them made such dramatic price drops.
As for the three-year contract, I agree that it's a bit of a bear, but consider that there are currently no other GSM providers in Canada, and that Rogers does permit hardware upgrades one year into the contract. So, unlike AT&T and other carriers, where you can't buy a new subsidized phone until the end of your two-year contract, Rogers at least allows you to upgrade every year (as long as you want to keep extending your contract and locking yourself in). Rogers also allows you to change plans within the contract term.... Cancellation fees only apply if you want to disconnect entirely or go to an extremely basic plan (under $30 in total).
The Apple website has forwarded people to the Rogers and Fido websites since the iPhone 3G was announced. This is not in response to there horrible plans.

Tech Crunch says Apple pulling Canadian phones... I am not seeing a huge difference in price from the AT&T plans.
Doesn't matter anyways. At least when you go in the Apple store there are cool things to play with, when you go into a Rogers store, you need to hold on to your wallet.
