With Apple's release of iTunes 7.7 and the new 2.0 firmware for iPod touch and iPhone, everything seems to be running a day early. Over at hacker central, the iPhone dev team guys are still in wait mode.
For those of you looking for a glimpse of hackage to come, they've posted a number of screen shots, showing all kinds of nifty Apple-unapproved applications.

This update does not work on the iPod Touch. It's for the iPhone only. The iPod file will be available tomorrow.

Or later tonight. The iPhone update hasn't been *officially* released yet either. They just poked around and found a download link.

I'm not sure that you will find a link to it - you have to pay for it; it's probably hidden away or user linked.

Yeah... forget jailbreaking. Goodbye instability, unreliable apps, crashing, and unreliable installation system, and hello AppStore!

there are still some of us that would like our phones unlocked

True for most apps, but until there's a workaround to running backgound apps, there are still (non-phone-related) reasons for the jailbreaking. Last.fm's app has already been announced it wont (initially) be able to scrobble for this reason and 1password as we saw yesterday was redesigned as its own browser application. Not to mention UI hacks and the like.

lincoln... lots of friends of mine are experiencing all of the above with the app store and the apple update (crashing, instability and such)... looks like jailbreaking is not so evil after all...

i'm loving the 2.0 firmware. i only used a number of my jailbreak apps as it was, half of them are already on the appstore for free. i have no qualms.

Nice misleading headline there, TUAW.
How hard is it to check a fact or two? Or is it more important just to hit your post count quotas?

Not necessarily TUAW's fault, just Erica up to her old bi-polar passive-aggressive self, posting mostly useless stuff.
Jailbreak is nice, for those that love their iPhones to crash, freeze, and break - carrier free unlocking is a WHOLE different matter.
Wanna start a pool how long it will take before the 'Dev team' will just give up?
Mind you, it's no trick creating a Frankenstein out of earlier beta code, with patches of more recent firmwares, to make it look as if they've done a jailbreak - let's see how well this goes with the ACTUAL firmware that's shipping.
Doubt they will unlock anytime soon, and doubt anyone will jailbreak and ACTUAL iPhone 3G (all of these pics are regular original iPhones, with the bootloader exploit, having 2.0 firmware loaded on. NOT an iPhone 3G.)
Like I said - betting pool, anyone?

You're honestly doubting that someone will jailbreak a 3G iPhone? I mean come on someone will do it, within a few days I suspect. maybe you should "zinkdifferent" and no doubt some incredibly talented people who are doing these things with only donations.

"We found a reference in an XML file that links to a URL on Apple's CDN that you can download and run in a not-clearly-documented manner that will update (certain) models of the hardware in question though apparently it fails on some phones" is not "2.0 is out."
Seriously, you guys are just the worst kind of reporters ever.

It seems like they always want to be the first ones to post things or something, even though mostly it's just links to other blogs without fact checking at all.

Has anyone tried to upgrade a 1.1.4 jailbroken/sim unlocked phone yet? I want to know what will happen because I have 1.1.4 here in Canada on Robbers(Rogers) but I'm hoping that I don't have to wait and still have to SIM unlock it.

Ya, dev team says don't try it on IRC. I'm in the same boat, and patience is key.
However, if you try it (and you don't brick your phone) let me know!
