iPhone 3G screens made "warmer"

The great 320 x 480 screen was among the things that didn't change with the 3G iPhone, or so we thought. Some of the lucky folks who managed to snag a 3G iPhone have noticed that the screen on the new model seems to be slightly yellowish compared to the original iPhone. Now Engadget is reporting that this is intentional. According to an Apple marketer "the screen's color temperature has been purposely altered on the new iPhone to produce warmer, more natural tones, sharper images, and deeper blacks."

Apparently the iPhone engineers decided that the first generation iPhone screen was "colder and less defined" and so made the change. So for those of you out there that have upgraded: what do you think? Is the new screen better?

Sure the battery on iPhone 3G is not that great, but what can we do? We want small size phones, powerful features and lengthy battery life.

Just get a backup battery. I got mine from iPhoneck brands. Their new 3G backup battery is probably one of the better looking products in the market. Their website is www.iphoneck.com

I don't know about the iPhone 3G, but my brother brought home an iPod touch a few weeks ago, and compared to my own (which I bought on December 26th) his DEFINITELY has a much yellower color temperature. It honestly in my opinion looks horrible. I really like how my iPod's is bluer. As was mentioned before, we need Clorox!

I have a first generation iPhone. All I did was download the new firmware: aka 2.0
I noticed the yellow look. I thought it was me until I read about the new phone in engadget. When I push the slider to unlock the screen, there is a yellow hue around the slider bar. Also the various app buttons respond to touch slighty slower.

You should add a note to your original blog entry pointing people to the comment about the software update. Otherwise you have read a dozen comments before realizing that this can be corrected.

hate it. New iPhone looks pi**ed on.

I'd rather have my whites white than my blacks black. It's less noticable each day... But "white" colors look like urine.

Disappointed.

Why would anyone want their white to look yellow??? The idea of warmer is fine buy come on, when the white background of a webpage looks yellow you have to think that people are going to notice and correctly complain about it.

Yeah, the first iPhones screens were WAAAY too blue, like in the 9300 Kelvin neighborhood. The new screens may look yellow when relatively compared to the old ones, but closer to neutral on an absolute scale.

Do iPhones have ColorSync? Will I be able to use a colorimeter and calibrate those suckers? It'd be great to hit a white point of 5000 Kelvin at 1.8 gamma to be reasonably close to my Eizo ColorEdge display.

From a company that helped create color management as we know it, those earlier blue screens were pretty irresponsible. I'm happy they changed it.

I happen to have both iPhone 2G and 3G on my desk; side-by-side the 3G does look warmer (yellower) and has noticeably better-defined blacks.

IMHO it's an improvement.
