So in this case, Jailbreak means: run 3rd party apps built with the Apple SDK & install through either Cydia / Installer.app OR roll your own Apple SDK built apps. Which apparently should work on all iPhone / Touch models.

Unlock should be available for iPhone first gen and NOT (yet) for the iPhone 3G.

Will the granny-suitable tool offer you the choice to only unlock(+activate) and leave the rest untouched?

I stopped reading when it was clear that there is no expected launch date.

Yeah, I get it... it jailbreaks and it unlocks. Just launch the f-in thing.

The 3G device and 2.0 firmware was officially launched on friday the 11th of June. We had to hone the exploit that we had developed for the 3G iPhone and ensure that it was working with all devices, as we didn't have access to retail hardware so we couldn't test it before. Then we had to incorporate that technique into PwnageTool and test etc. It won't be long now. thanks

The only reason I see for using LiveBlog is because it's technologically cool. In this instance the 100's of question per minute coming in, although moderated, did exactly add anything insightful that I would not have expect Erica to ask on her own anyway. Done again a list of questions sent to Pytey or the DevTeam would be preferred.

The sense of entitlement on most forums never ceases to amaze me. "We think you should run your forum the way we would run it."

If you don't like the way the furniture is arranged, I don't think anyone's chained up in here. Don't let the door hit ya' in the ass on your way out...

I agree. The amount of QQ on the comments section in this post is astounding.

third that. Reading TUAW comments is getting boring with all the whingers out there - I used to find interesting additional info, but now it's all whinge, whinge, whinge. This seems to get much worse whenever it's an Erica posting. Maybe they're jealous that a girl can hack and code better than them?

Sweet! Now we can use all variety of applications instead of just the Apple-sanitized ones AND get improved, free versions of all the pay ones!

What does it matter? Unlike the original iPhone, you can't acquire a 3G iPhone without first selling your soul and first born to AT&T. It might matter in two years time when the contracts start to expire, but not now.

TUAW reporting on iPhone 2.0 unlocking developments just like Gizmodo, Engadget, MDN, Wired, Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Business Week, the Economist........

How outrageous.

I was disappointed my question didn't get in - I was trying to ask whether it'll be possible to use the Apple SDK with a jailbroken phone to install apps without paying the 99 dollar developer fee.

I have no interest in releasing anything I write on the App Store, but I also don't need low-level APIs, and I would LOVE to have the convenience of the SDK's great tools like the emulator and one-click build and run on the iphone. I'm not willing to pay a hundred bucks for that convenience, though, when I plan to give any apps I write away for free.

Yes you'll be able to use non-appstore home developed apps with the device. You don't need to be part of the developer program to be able to do this, there is an alternative toolchain that you can use that is maintained by someone else. thanks.

Thanks for the reply pytey, but I don't think you understood my question. I've used the open toolchain before, but I PREFER the Apple sanctioned SDK. I just like working in their environments better, and I like the emulator and ability to test on the phone with one click. The whole thing is just a little bit slicker and more polished than the open toolchain. So, I'm hoping someone figures out a way to use the full power of the Apple SDK without paying the hundred bucks.

Tsk tsk...deleting comments that criticize the coverage?

How despicable.

I take this back - this new weblog software that all the Weblogs sites use stinks... comments are always getting swallowed then spit back out.

Summary: read our blog, I can't comment on that, generic answer #76.

Yawn. I just can't get myself to care about the jailbreak community. It seems like a niche market to me and just because Erica is (supposedly) active in that market doesn't mean it should be getting the press on TUAW it has received over the last year.
