Greg Joswiak explains iPhone missing features

ExtremeTech managed to score an interview with Apple's vice president of Hardware Product Marketing Greg Joswiak where he discusses some of the tradeoffs of the 3G iPhone. He explains that cut and paste didn't make it into iPhone 2.0 just because they didn't get to it, judging "other things to be more important." He also corrects David Pogue who had previously claimed that the iPhone was not technically capable of turn-by-turn GPS, leading us to believe that the limitations aren't technical so much as legal.

Personally, I find it rather strange that Apple considers cut and paste such a low priority feature. I often find myself really missing it, and you'd think it would be worth implementing just to shut up all the people who complain about it. Nonetheless, I suppose this is hopeful in that it suggests that Apple will probably get around to it at some point.

The missing features are hiding in Greg Joswiak's shirt.

Lack of cut & paste makes iPhone useless as a "smartphone"/PDA-phone and without it I will never buy one. I'll get a BlackBerry or Palm first.

The MAIN feature I want in a smartphone is the ability to organize my life...and that includes making & revising lists of things and notes to myself. That is virtually impossible to do without cut & paste (yes, I know, I can just re-type every single thing I want to move, every single time I want to move it...gee, I remember that's how typewriters used to work).

It's a version of OS X in there...it would be trivial to add. Maybe they have a hard time making the UI elegant, but too bad, give me clunky and functional rather than elegant and useless.

I would just like "Apple's vice president of Hardware Product Marketing Greg Joswiak" to use the 'real Internet' from the iPhone and receive a SMS or email message in a foreign language, maybe cyrillic Russian text, and then use one of the web sites to translate it to English. I used to do this all the time. Now I don't and I can cut and paste or forward an SMS to email either. And I can't use a dictionary application to look up a word because I can't cut it from the document and paste it into the dictionary app. It is not hard to do cut and paste. Use the touch and hold feature used for the display of alternate characters to pop up a menu from the "ABC"/".123" key. The menu needs:
Select/Mark - This starts the selection range
Cut - This cuts the text selected
Copy - This copies the text selected
Paste - This pastes the text at the insertion point
Clear/Delete - This deletes the selected text
In use one would position the cursor as normal, use the Select menu item to start a selection, then use the normal insertion point movement method to select a range of text. Then use the Cut/Copy/Paste(replaces selected text), or Clear menu actions. Overload of the "ABC" button is the best way to do this. I implemented this in my app for the iPhone using a dedicated button on the interface. It would be better to be a system level behavior so text could move application to application. My other issue is the calendar framework is open on the desktop but not the iPhone. I am having to force the app to sync to the desktop, have the desktop app play with the desktop calendar and that gets the events pushed back to the phone. I should be able just to do this on the phone!!!! But Cut/Paste is most important. It saves writing things on PAPER to use the phone.

From day one, I have never understood why Apple:
1) won't let you use the keyboard in landscape mode in any application except Safari. It would be really nice to have a landscape keyboard for e-mails and notes, since the keyboard is easier to use and hold in that orientation.
2) makes adjusting call volume also change the ringer volume. I can't count the number of times I've lowered the volume during a phone call, only to miss another phone call later on, because the volume was too low.
3) no MMS?!?
4) no copy and paste?!?

Again, an ignored tip on the tip hotline...so here it goes:

Basically, if they wanted realtime navigation, the map license fees would be way higher.

Well, another deal breaker for me is that there is no version of keychain, so every time I need to log onto a roaming wifi (through safari...) I have to go through a long-winded log in procedure... That sucks!
Really this phone needs to be more PDA like. More of Newtons features please!!! I am keen to buy one!

Here's my issue: There's no way to compose a new email and THEN attach a picture to it. I have to open the picture first and click Send as Email.

And I've only had an iPhone now for a few days, and there have been at least 3 times when Copy/Paste would have come in SUPER HANDY! :)

MMS or no MMS I was surprise to see that cut and paste did not make the list... I also want to select a bunch of text and delete it at once and I can't seem to do that with my iPhone did they forget this feature too or am I just not spending enough time getting to know the new wares?

Take a look at the people that want MMS and those that are tired of hearing people complain about the lack of feature.. YOU are all out numbered. I agree, email is a far better option but not everyone is as lucky and financially stable as we are to own an iphone and have internet access in our pocket. I cant stand having to write down a username and password to check out a pick/message sent to me from a friend or family member.. APPLE needs to man up and get this done!!! I'm tired of defending my iphone when asked of why don't you have mms or video recording.
