Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for iPhone
CrunchGear has a cool video of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Unleashed running on an iPhone. The first half is just dialog and cinematics from the game, so feel free to jump ahead a bit.
You'll see how the game makes use of the iPhone's touch screen. For instance, different gestures produce different effects (Force power, lightsaber deflect, etc.). I'd like to see how other aspects of the game work as well, like piloting a ship and other battles.
It definitely looks like fun, though constantly having your finger on the screen could get distracting. In any case, the iPhone is certainly becoming quite the little gaming platform.

I gotta say, that's pretty cool.
The force unleased itself looks like an awesome awesome game, but this looks super innovative with the use of the iphone touch screen.

The control looks horrible.

Could have worked, but just using the force and no duelling! Game design is not for me.

Simple, make a controller that you wrap around the iPhone.
That way, it holds the iphone in place so you can use both your hands to control the game.

seems a bit repetitive but could be good

Force choke, throw. Force Choke, throw. Force Choke, throw. deflect, deflect, deflect, Force Choke, throw.

the sad part is if they made a standard iphone controller that could connect via bluetooth to the iphone every gamer would buy one and especially if they made games for the iphone with that controller in mind it would rock hands down, hell even i'd buy one as the games look great, but im not down with motion or touch as a primary gaming input, until that changes it will remain niche in my view

I'm a gamer and there's no way in hell I would buy a standard controller for my iphone. I have a PSP and DS and Gameboy Micro for my mobile gaming needs.
I mean, I can barely make it though my day without the battery dying. Games would destroy the battery for sure. I think they need to stick with novelty games and leave the real gaming to the big boys.

I wonder if they could incorporate an add-on controller that also used 2AA batteries to charge the controller (and hopefully charge the phone).

Even better, imagine some dock you can throw the iPhone into so it lasts longer and has more traditional controls. The iPhone is in the same stage the DS was when it released: no one knew how to take advantage of its hardware. It wasn't until Nintendogs hit that people realized where the DS belonged. Right now we're waiting for the iPhone's Nintendogs to show people what the iPhone is really built for.
To be honest, I don't think even Apple could make that game...it'll be some quiet developer who gets the epiphany.

The problem with a separate controller that would connect via bluetooth is that you would then have to hold *two* devices with your hand. Sure, you could lay the iPhone on your lap or a table, but that's not how I picture "mobile".

So you you use both hands with the controller, what's holding the iPhone/Screen? Not exactly portable.

I was going to ask if I was the only one who thought this looked repetitive and boring as hell, but I guess I am. Where's the fun in watching a guy walk around and then drawing swirlies on the screen over and over (and over) again?

Horribly unimaginative. Its the same gesture over and over again. Hardly stimulating gameplay.

It does look a bit repetitive, but color me impressed...

I'm gonna echo the "Repetitive" comment as well. I do like the idea of finger gestures for fast paste "dueling," but for the game to be fun, I'd expect more than just two gestures. It also seemed to get hectic when fighting multiple people because his finger was always in the way of the screen. How are you supposed to see how to kill Dude #2 when you're already performing a gesture to kill Dude #1?
In response to the gaming pad ad-on, I don't think Apple would ever sanction one. It would completely open up a path (of hardware ad-ons) that Apple is trying to lead away from. It's well known that Jobs hates buttons, and he's not going to allow any more buttons near his beloved iPhone. If a pad were to come along it'd be through the Jailbroken route... It'd be nice if they created a separate Jailbreak SDK for hardware, right?

Okay so the graphics are impressive, but the game itself looks dull.
Forget this Lucasarts, give us Sam and Max or Grim Fandango - surely they would port with ease...

Here's a second for Grim Fandango! Any of the KQ series, or Myst as well.

Check out http://www.icontrolpad.com/ for any/all Jailbroken iPhone gamers that are interested in an add on control device for their ROM emulators. This should be available on a massive scale close to September
