First Look: Twinkle
The iPhone will no doubt see it's fair share of Twitter clients (just as the Mac has). Twitterrific is the big name in the Mac/iPhone Twitter app space, but in a client from Tapulous called "Twinkle" has also been generating some interest. Originally released as a jailbreak application for the iPhone and iPod touch, Twinkle has just debuted on the App Store with the ability to location-base your tweets. While Twitterrific seems to have more precise locating abilities, Twinkle uses the location-based tweeting in interesting ways. For instance, you can see tweets originating within a certain mileage range from your location. Twinkle allows you to easily view your direct messages.
Overall, Twinkle looks like it will give Twitterrific a run for its money. Best part of all? Twinkle (iTunes Link) for iPhone and iPod touch is absolutely free.

Hey guys, one of the Twinkle devs here. The reason we're having connection problems is because our servers are overloaded. We're working on the problem, stay tuned!

Free with no ads? Adios, Twitterific.

Not loving the idea that I have to sign up for yet ANOTHER account to use this app at all -- wish I could send tweets without signing up for a Tapulous account. This model, where I send a tweet through a Tapulous server which then sends it on to Twitter, is kind of ridiculous because now I'm at the mercy of TWO different servers that are easily overloaded.
OK, I guess we commenters need to write the "First Look" article.
I'm surprised so many people are in love with Twinkle, since it doesn't have an option to "favorite" a tweet (among other things). Granted, I'm loving the fact that Twinkle puts posted photos right in the tweet (once you tap through to see details on the tweet). However, links aren't so handy. Besides the fact that Twitterriffic has a fancy built-in instance of webkit for embedded links, Twinkle falls short in a HUGE way if someone posts a tinyURL link that goes to YouTube: tap the link in Twinkle, which then closes and bounces you to Safari, which then closes and bounces you to YouTube.app. Same thing would happen if you were to tap on a bit.ly link that goes to a Google Maps URL.
Twinkle is kinda great for when Twitter goes down, since they operate their own network...but a) that's only useful when all your friends are using Twinkle, and b) it's not useful at all (even when Twitter is up) when the Tapulous network goes down.
And for my last two gripes, scrolling speed (latency) is pretty crummy, and there is no landscape mode. It's pretty funny that MobileSafari's scrolling speed is superb, and it handles landscape mode perfectly. I imagine I may be in a minority, since most of my Twitter reading time happens to be just before bed...but oh well.
So far, even given the interesting features that both Twitterriffic and Twinkle have brought to the table, I still can't bring myself to stop using Hahlo. It's gonna be hard to beat, in terms of feature-complete-ness.
I'm hoping, by the time the Push Notification Service debuts, that Tapulous and Icon Factory will have pushed some impressive updates to the Store (and hopefully Apple will start piping them to the consumer in a timely fashion). If all these things come together, THEN we'll have some compelling software!
Whoa whoa whoa! Bad timing, guys. It's important to note that Twinkle is having server issues at the moment, due to way way too many people accessing the server.
They're working on it. This isn't a good time to judge the app. Give it some time and try again, it's really a great app and is very addictive.
I have tried it out today and it kept on giving me a unable to post server error. I do not like this app as much as twitterific.
July 18 2008 at 5:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI got a message today saying they were down to roll out bigger servers. I used this app last night and it was PERFECT. I'm really in love with it.
I tried all the others that had big blaring annoyances and this I only have two smaller ones:
1. inability to trash your own tweets - I made a typo, had to delete it on twitters website, and its still floating around in tapulous
2. the inability to block users on the 'near me' tab. By the end of last night, half the local tweets were 'Yo, anyone in ____ wanna hook up?' 'SUP TWINKS!? N E 1 WANNA CHAT?' and 'yo chack out my band!' all spammed by 16 year olds.
The best thing is the little fail whale graphic when you cant connect :) makes the disappointment a little easier.
Anyway, wait for the servers to come back up and give it another shot!
I apologize in advance for being the grammar nitpicker, but "it's" is equal to "it is". You needed to use "its" for the possessive. For a reminder, bookmark
