iPhone 101: Re-downloading an application

Has a sync somehow gone terribly wrong and you've lost your favorite paid application for your iPhone or iPod touch? Well, if you didn't have a backup of it in your iTunes library, fear not. Apple has designed the App Store to allow for re-downloading purchased applications.

All you have to do is navigate to the application that you originally bought in the App Store and tap "Buy." You will have to enter your password, and the App Store will return you to your home screen where it displays a message saying that you've already bought this application and are entitled to an additional free download. After you tap "OK," your app will begin downloading.

Now you don't have to fret about losing your favorite iPhone or iPod touch application.

Just for the record, your email address in your iTunes account should be receiving a detailed email receipt of EVERY App Store download and purchase (even for free apps), they record every repeat download as well.

That's where you'll find an inventory of all of your apps each separate time you make multiple purchases in the App Store.

Also, did you know that when you buy an app, let's say "Cro-Mag Rally" for $9.99, that you can INSTALL IT FOR FREE ON ALL iPhones and iPod Touches that you may have? You need to download all via iTunes initially so they reside in your Applications Library, then you can sync each device to automatically install them.

OR, if you purchase via the App Store on the iPhone directly, make sure you hit "OK" next time you connect to iTunes when it asks if you want to Transfer purchases from the iPhone back to iTunes Application library. Then the app will be available for multiple installs.

I have several paid apps/games, and all of them that are in iTunes can be synced FOR FREE to mine and my wife's iPhones, plus an old iPod Touch that I upgraded to 2.0.

That works out to $3.33 EACH for Cro-Mag Rally...99 cent app costs 33 cents each! Way Cool!

Every time I connect my iPhone to a new computer all my apps are deleted from the iPhone. These are apps I bought and paid for. Then I have to re-download and re-install. Why do I have to do this? I am outraged.

Here in Wyoming we're limited to four characters, so we have to be creative. I'm a Mac consultant. My Vibe has ICAR (too bad we can't get lower case!). In the past I had APPL.

Sorry about the other post. 1Password was too fast for me.

Why are you connecting your phone to multiple computers? That's your problem. They're meant to be more or less monogamous.

I have got a problem. I bought sketches a few days ago on my first gen iphone. Synced it, but i suppose for some reason it didnt sync sketches. Bought the new iPhone 3g yesterday, and sketches didnt come up. iTunes doesnt remember me buying it, but I definitely did because it is still on my first gen iphone. I have no idea what to do. Help?

Minor nag with the App Store, now that updates are hitting: the updated app icon takes the first available spot, NOT the spot the application had before. Not a big deal but a minor annoyance.

Tremendously lame. Apple will let the iPhoners have whatever they want, but I still have to pay $5.99 again to get Zuma for my iPod Classic after I already paid for it once on my 5th gen.

I'm experiencing the same error after my iPhone tells me to get the application from iTunes. It seems to only happen with the updated applications.

I removed the apps from the iTunes folder hoping that they would fix the problem. It seems like the apps were synced again, but I can't tell whether I have the updated versions of the apps or not. Considering the AppStore on my iPhone tells me I still need to update the programs, I assume they're versions 1.0.

Nevertheless, the apps work, and every time I try to update, I get the "connect to iTunes" error and the app is deleted.

My guess is that I initiated this error by being too impatient downloading updates. I started using the phone before the updates were completed. The iPhone also doesn't seem to like that when you initially install any app.

Oh yeah, I have the 3G phone. Any solutions?

What about if you pay for something and then it is updated? If it is a bug fix release, people won't want to pay for it again, and if it is a major release, the devs won't want to give it away for free. Does the App Store provide for this situation?

Yes, it comes up that there are updates waiting to be downloaded when you start up iTunes and it automatically downloads everything and correctly replaces what is being fixed
