Pwnage 2.0 released
The iPhone Dev Team has just released PwnageTool 2.0, thus bringing jailbreak and non-App Store third-party application support to iPhones/iPod Touches running firmware 2.0. First-generation iPhones can also be unlocked. At this time, the iPhone 3G cannot be unlocked or used with BootNeuter.Erica will post more details later tonight or tomorrow, and the Dev Team promises a more detailed announcement soon.
As always, be cautious if you decide to install PwnageTool 2.0 and make proper backups of all of your data before proceeding, understand that installing software like PwnageTool is unsupported by Apple, blah blah blah.
Enjoy!
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I should have said this in my original post but it is failing for me at the point where my iPhone 3G should enter DFU mode. Anyone else having this same problem?

Worked perfectly first time.
Just follow the instructions on the screen... couldn't be simpler.

Also:
mkdir "~/Library/iTunes/Device Support"
If you don't have that directory it fails (although why you wouldn't I've no idea.. it's created by itunes).

Did you let iTunes download the .ipsw and upgrade then use Pwnage for the unlock or did you download the ipsw from Apple directly?
oz_paulb said 8:25PM on 7-19-2008
@hazyfakie: I'm having problems with PwnageTool 2.0 - it gives me an error saying that it failed to go into DFU mode. Here's what I get in the log file:
2008-07-19 20:09:22 - Successfully built custom .ipsw file at '/Users/......../Desktop/iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw'.
2008-07-19 20:09:24 - Failed to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw file.
The "Failed to prepare" message makes me think that something's missing (not that there's any problem with my iPhone going into DFU mode).
Was your iPhone previously pwned with an earlier version of PwnageTool? What OS were you running when you ran PwnageTool 2.0? (did you use iTunes to go to 2.0/locked first, then PwnageTool, or did you just leave it at 1.1.4 and let PwnageTool do the update?)
Thanks,
- Paulb

I had previously pwned my 1.1.4 FW
At the end of the building the IPSW, pwnage asks you whether you've pwned it
Downloaded 5A347 from:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750
Downloaded the bootloaders from:
http://rapidshare.com/files/104494661/bootloaders.rar
After installing there were two problems - Mail.app kept crashing on start and Safari wouldn't accept cookies
Fixed by installing OpenSSH from Cydia, logged in as root / alpine and did the following to fix it:
chmod 777 /var/mobile/Library/Mail
chown mobile /var/mobile/Library/Cookies/
chown mobile /var/mobile/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
Hope that helps

I got that exact same error message in my log.
2008-07-19 17:37:47 - Successfully built custom .ipsw file at '/Users/Favor/Desktop/iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw'.
2008-07-19 17:38:12 - Failed to prepare x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw file.
I made sure to connect the iPhone 3G before I started the application and it fails to enter DFU mode every time. I obviously haven't jailbroken my iPhone 3G before...

1. Use the downloaded 2.0 for your device - I've seen a lot of people trying to use the 3G 2.0 on a 2G.
2. If there is anything on the screen you are *not* in DFU mode - DFU mode is the one with the completely blank screen (looks switched off, but itunes says it's in recovery mode anyway). pwnage gives very easy steps to get into this mode.

Anyone having problems opening the app. it bounces and stalls out after 5m. I have leopard on a macbook so there shouldnt be a compatibility issue. I tried re downloading and restarting still no success.

I'm having the exact same issue, even after restart and in a clean user account. I have no idea what is causing this.
Zoli said 10:36PM on 7-19-2008
I have the same problem on a MacBook. Works perfectly on an iMac though.
...weird.

So, is this problem solved? On my MBP C2D I can't start the program. It bounces and bounces. Nothing helps. Restart etc.
Help, anyone, please?

I am about to try it on my 3G the only problem I have is will the App store work in addition to installer after because I recall the App store didn't work in the beta with installer. I'm gonna give it a try I'll let you know how the process goes as soon as it's over with. Wish me luck. Backing up the iPhone right now and then Pwning.

This will NOT put Installer on the iPhone, any of them, it uses Cydia installer but there are not many apps yet for the 2.0 firmware, just the stuff through apple, so just know that going in. It may be a couple weeks (a guess) before we see installer and have the option to get wallpapers, themes etc. back, especially on the 3G iPhones.
