Get iPhone availability updates every 15 minutes

Can't find an iPhone 3G? Well, TopMuffin has created a site that checks Apple's store inventory every 15 minutes. According to the site, Apple updates the inventory throughout the day. TopMuffin's site parses the feed (feed link) and shows iPhone 3G availability by Apple Store.

TopMuffin doesn't just post availability info, they also do some statistics to find the percent available. When we checked the page, Apple had 45% availability for 8GB black iPhones, 53% availability for 16GB black iPhones, and 41% availability for 16GB white iPhones.

This site does not list availability for AT&T stores, and only lists stores located in the U.S. A disclaimer is posted on the page lets viewers know that the best way to check iPhone availability is to call your local store. You can view the site by clicking the read link.

***UPDATE***

The site has a notice now that it no longer works:

This page will not be updated again as Apple has removed their 3G
iPhone availability data via JSON and replaced it with a new lookup.

So until they figure out how to tap into the data again, we won't be able to get up-to-the-15-minute availability anymore.

@Marc J:

What are you talking about that "current iPhone users are not allowed to get an upgrade from the Apple store"? That's not true.
I upgraded mine at the Apple store and I had the 1st generation iPhone.

@budk11: Apologize? For what? That other people can afford to wait in line and you can't? The Apple "stock status" page never claimed to be real-time.

Not in the UK. I asked Sunday at the Regenet Street flagship - was told no go. "Sorry, new accounts only". Asked O2 today they said (and I quote) "Apple apparently don’t have the facility/system set up to upgrade our existing customers which I know sounds very unfair on your behalf which I can only apologise for".

Today Sunday 7/27 I was at the Apple Store on West 14th St. in Manhattan and was greeted with their Sorry No 3G iPhone sign today. This was late in the afternoon. The listing from TopMuffin shows 8 GB black and 16 GB white in stock as of 8:53 PM EDT. Don't think so. Can't depend on this list. What I think is happening is each store is getting a handful of phones so Apple's Widget is Green at 9:00 PM and their supply is quickly exhausted. Not a good way to do business Steve. The Apple aura is gone with the 3G launch. They are becoming like Microsoft.

Went to AT&T store here in Seattle today and they informed me that they are not accepting iPhone orders today because of a system problem with the ordering system. Told to come back tomorrow and might be up again. Such a waste time. I guess I would probably have an iPhone in my hand if I didn't have a LIFE and JOB that prevented me from waking my ass up at 3am to go stand outside the Apple store.

I went to the Alderwood Mall Apple Store and they said they are having issues, but I got two coupons for iPhones and they told me to bring them back later this evening to see if the problem is fixed.

Ditto many other comments. The site is a waste of time. I checked several VA stores. All had the phone in stock according to the site. Phone call results were just the opposite. Apple blew it big time on this. And no apology yet. THIS is how to lose customers. Apple's attitude is starting to show. Never thought I'd say it (having made THE SWITCH about 7 years ago), but they've become just another MS.

Why should there be an apology? Unless I'm completely missing something, Apple hasn't published any web page advertising iPhone availability except for the "after 9:00pm" one.

The information on the Top Muffin site is totally inaccurate. It says they used Apple's inventory data as of 1:51pm today and posted at 2:15. I called the Apple Soho store at 2:18 and they said they were sold out. I can't imagine they went from green to red in 20 minutes.

Whilst we all welcome an Apple success the 3g launch is a bit of a joke. As an iPhone edge early adopted (day of launch) I also welcome the fact I can chop my 'old' iPhone in - however seeing stacks of iPhone 3g (16gb) at the Regent Street that I can't have (because current iPhone users are not allowed to get an upgrade from the Apple store) sucks.

Apple are also stacking up white 16gb for new blood whilst us beta chimps need to wait until Xmas. Not happy.

This is not accurate. I just called the Arlington Clarendon store in VA. They had 100 people in line before the store opened. They handed out a ticket to people who they could give a phone to and then sent the rest home. The store was technically sold out as soon as it opened. Looks like I just need to keep waiting for my AT&T order to get fulfilled. Been about 11 days. Hopefully soon.

San Franicisco's flagship shore is not running out of iPhones. They are running out of time. They close the line and turn people away. If only they stayed open 24/7 like NY
