Google Translate ported to iPhone

You know if the App Store has been out for a month and we're posting about a web app, it has to be a good one. Google announced late last week that they've brought the terrific Google Translate service over to the iPhone. Of course, whenever you travel internationally, roaming charges (sometimes huge ones) can come into play, but if you find yourself tooling around Spain and need more phrases than ¿Dónde está el baño? or Tú eres mi chica, Google's web app will do the trick fast and easy.

And there's some nice coding in there, too -- the phrases translated get stored on the client side of the phone, so if you've already translated something, you don't have to reload the page to see it again. To use the service, just point your MobileSafari to translate.google.com. Folks in other countries probably still won't care too much what you have to say, but at least they'll know what you're saying.

Spain? What about the 34,044,945 people that speak Spanish in the US or most of the countries south of the border, from Mexico to Argentina... have you heard of them??? And as others have said, you would look like a fool if you speak as Google translates!

Without a Cut & Paste feature, this app seems limited in its functionality from the get go...

:-(

I use the web-based version of Google translate quite often, and I almost ALWAYS paste the text I want to translate.

It just seems it would be a grand pain in the a$$ to have to manually enter the foreign text you wanted translated.

My 2c.

Awesome! Who says you need to go international to use it... It might help when you need help in WalMart. I can't tell you how many times I've heard. "No Speak English" from the employees...

Nice, but the icon it puts on my home screen is ugly and pixelated - gotta fix that!

Looks like it has potential - the only problem is that the translation on the screenshot is wrong. It should be... "¿Puede usted llevarme al aeropuerto, por favor?" Not a very good advertisement for google. oops!

Have fun paying the phone bill for this one. AT&T will charge exorbitant fees to use data internationally. I have purposely bought an unlocked iPhone 3G for international use from Hong Kong's Hutchinson 3 Network ($900) just to avoid paying for international data use.

Even with AT&T's international data package, you are locked into paying for it for 12 months or 24 months (can't remember which) and you only get 20 MB for international use, and pay $20/month.
