Ohio Apple Store robbed in early morning hours

Early yesterday morning, an Apple Store in Ohio was robbed. The Easton Town Center Apple Store's glass window (or door) was shattered and the robbers began snatching merchandise and placing it in their car's trunk. The robbers were reported to be driving a black Lexus. When police arrived on the scene, the robbers drove off, hitting the police car.

If you are in the Columbus, Ohio area and have information for police, you are urged to call the Columbus Police Department at 614-645-4545. There is no word yet on when the Apple Store will re-open for business.

So, since when does a blog like this report such a news? And publishes police phone numbers?

I can understand that you love apple so much but please, don't start with neighbourhood watch please!

Stick to the topic thank you...

Wouldn't it not matter anyway. Stolen Macs that would be new in box would have to registered... wouldn't that alert someone, somewhere to them trying to use a stolen computer?

Or am I just retarded?

I can't believe that the cops could not call in for arial backup in a timely manner to catch the robbers.

Were the cops put out of commission from the hit? Or was it that the police department just didn't want to put enough "resources" into catching the thieves?

It's not like the thieves were long gone before the cops showed up.

Probably too busy trying to catch CR people street racing at that time of night (like they did a month or so ago on I71 out of Polaris).

Fado, Bar Louie, and a couple other places are open until 2AM every night of the week, from my understanding (Fado for sure). That would explain why there was law enforcement there. When I've closed down a few of those places Columbus police (and not Easton security) will walk through and patrol. Kind of silly to break in before every place there is closed.

To all of the previous law critics:

Don't criticize the author for the title when you are misinformed. The difference between burglary and robbery is NOT universal. Laws vary from State to State. In most cases Robbery involves stealing from a person and Burglary involves stealing from a structure.

However, Ohio's Robbery law states the following:

2911.02 Robbery.

(A) No person, in attempting or committing a theft offense or in fleeing immediately after the attempt or offense, shall do any of the following:

(1) Have a deadly weapon on or about the offender’s person or under the offender’s control;

(2) Inflict, attempt to inflict, or threaten to inflict physical harm on another;

(3) Use or threaten the immediate use of force against another.

(B) Whoever violates this section is guilty of robbery. A violation of division (A)(1) or (2) of this section is a felony of the second degree. A violation of division (A)(3) of this section is a felony of the third degree.

Clearly, the offenders attempted to flee after the theft and intentionally rammed a police car which would probably constitute "immediate use of force against another".

It could be argued (and likely will be by their lawyer when they get caught), that the act of hitting the car was during the flee, and not part of the burglary. This would really be a few charges: Burglary, Evading Arrest, Failure to bey a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon. But the ramming of the cop car would not automatically change the burglary to robbery.

And while wording does vary from state to state, almost all states use burglary when stealing from a building/structure, and robbery is stealing from an actual person (empty house is burglary, if someone is home its robbery).

The Austin Apple Store in The Domain was similarly burglarized. They smashed one of the doors and grabbed a few things close to the entrance (mostly Airs) and then split before anybody got there. Gutsy heist, considering it's in a mixed-use development with nearby residents and private security.

I only found out about it because one of the store's doors had been replaced with plywood, and I wanted to know if the change of decor meant that El Jobso was going back to making computers out of wood. :)
