Eye-Fi and SmugMug team up for geotagging

EyeFiThe Eye-Fi card is an SD card with a difference -- it has Wi-Fi built into it for easy camera-to-internet transfer of photos. It comes in three different flavors; Eye-Fi Home, Eye-Fi Share, and Eye-Fi Explore. The latter card (US$129) includes free Wi-Fi access at Wayport hotspots, unlimited geotagging using Skyhook Wireless (the same service Apple and Google use for location data on pre-3G iPhones and iPod touch handhelds), and an unlimited WebShare service for sharing photos.

Eye-Fi and SmugMug (an online photo sharing site) announced a partnership providing a year of geotagging and hotspot access for SmugMug members using an original Eye-Fi Card or the $US99.99 Eye-Fi Share. SmugMug provides standard (US$39.95 annually), power user (US$59.95 annually) and professional ($149.95 annually) accounts, all of which provide ad-free, backed-up, and secure hosting of your photos.

Do you use an Eye-Fi card with your digital camera? If you do, what service do you upload your photos to, and do you use the geotagging capability? Leave us a comment.

hi there - any of you guys know if there is a way to pair an eye-fi card with an iPod touch? I'd love to be able to send my photos from my camera to an 'album on the go' on the Touch and then pick and choose which photos to email to people. Any idea if there's an iPhone / Touch App in development to allow this? Thanks

Just a little plug here for Smugmug. It's a FANTASTIC photo site. You can host unlimited photos and their galleries are absolutely gorgeous. I'm looking forward to picking up one of these!

My fiance who is an avid shutter bug loved her original Eye-Fi (until she lost it recently).

Just a warning though, we found another on clearance at a local retailer which was found to be blank when we took it home to set it up. This of course could have been done by someone who brought it back (and thus it was resold on clearance).

Customer support through Eye-Fi only offered the suggestion to use it as a regular SD card, I would have thought the firmware/software should be able to be reloaded onto the card, but no. Be careful to not accidentally format these cards as they are then no longer useful and cannot be repaired.

The tag link for Eye-Fi is incorrect; add the 'i'.

I heard the write speed of these cards is slow and not published. I sent an email asking about the write speed and was told it is comperable with 'standard' memory speeds, whatever that means.

I have a 12 megapixel camera so I've been concerned if it would affect performance as I take a lot of pictures.

We in the press photo world are waiting for a better product from this comany. At the minute you have to connect the card to a reuter and cannot connect directly to a laptop. When they sort that out every press man will have one in thier bag.

I've got the classic, so no geotagging, but I have all my photos upload to flickr... now only 600 photos from Maui to sort through since returning from vacation.

I have the original card and I really like it. I tried the geotagging and it works surprisingly well. I used to use Google's web albums, but it seems to be getting slow.

You didn't mention in the post about the 20% discount you get off the SmugMug pricing and that you also get access to "open" access points.

Excellent! I have one of these and they absolutely rock. I'll have to get myself a SmugMug account now and make the most of it.

I am just amazed by these little cards and how they manage to get wireless technology on them, let alone the Geotagging dats!

This news reminded me I wanted to do a quick review of my card. Check it out here if you are interested in one guys experience :)

Hey I've been using Smugmug for 4 years now and this little baby will be on my b-day wish list, Smugmug is a huge Apple/Mac fan and they had one of the first iphone apps that send the image directly to your account because the owner is an iphoner, plus theirs ab iPhone happy version of the site.
