Simplify Media for iPhone

The Simplify Media iPhone application (iTunes link) v1.1 has hit the App Store. As you can see from the video above, with Simplify Media installed on your Mac and on your iPhone or iPod touch, you can stream your home iTunes library to your mobile device wherever you may be. It will supposedly work over EDGE, 3G, or WiFi and promises what might be the holy grail for mobile audio devices -- practically unlimited storage.

To get started you'll need to download the Simplify Media Mac client as well as register for a free account. Then install the iPhone client on your mobile device and your home Mac should show up as a streaming source. In addition to your home machine, you can connect to up to 30 friends also running the cross-platform software.

Simplify Media for Mac is a free download. Only the first 100,000 copies of the iPhone version are free to download, after that it will be $3.99.

I really like this app. works great on my i-pod touch 32gig. I have asked everyone I have seen on this list that downloaded this app if they would like to share music. I have 5000 songs in my library for anybody to share. Also I would like to know if there are any dangers in sharing music like this. Right now i share music with my step-son and it works great i have access to his entire collection. So like I said before my collection is there for the sharing thanks ....tellis006

Simplify Peer constantly crashes on my Mac mini (home computer) while streaming at work on an iPhone. It just says buffering or connecting to libraries. I have had my wife restart Simplify for me but it keeps quitting. any tips on this issue?

This app was so sweet when it was on installer, now that it is on the app store it is buggy and the graphics and options seemed to have taken a down grade.

@drummingjack2: It won't play any DRM files, i.e. anything you have purchased.

This is really buggy...I am having all kinds of issues. The volume slider is stuck at max, it hangs up "buffering", the artwork doesn't always show up...I would love to use this app, but the frustration level is HUGE.

I have tried both Simplify and DOT.TUNES, and simplify works better for me. Sure, the songs may or may not take a while to buffer, depending on where you are, and what your running, I'm running a first gen on edge with three bars. Simplify recognizes my entire library (4000 songs) and takes about a second to five to load. DOT.TUNES, because you have to use it in safari, takes much longer.

Simplify just seems to work better for me. I like it. It works.

I've been using this now for the last 24 hours and there are a few things I'd like to make note of..

When connected via Wifi, this is the perfect product. Yes, I managed to get over the fact that I'm at 11,825 songs instead of my full iTunes library of 12,000. However, yesterday, when I left my apartment, and subsequently the range of my Wifi, I quickly saw a drop in connectivity (it buffered more than I think it should have). The song I was listening to continued to play, as did the next one, but when it was time to load up a third song, I was standing in line at Trader Joe's, where I assume the cell connection isn't too good and I was left with dead air.

And I think that would be the main problem of something like this. It isn't the product itself that is the issue, the idea of Simplify it is the 3G connection - in certain places, it's sketchy at best. And this poor connection is what causes the audio drop outs.

Also, someone mentioned that the sound only comes out of the headphone jacks. This is untrue. The sound most definitely plays through the pin connection. But, to be honest, as it is a streaming type-thing, the quality is not what it is going to be if you are listening to the iPod. The sound, while decent enough to dance to, (or drive to as it were), comes off thinner and more shallow than when using the standard iPod.

All in all, it is a great idea and I'm paying very close attention to when the kinks are worked out of the Edge and 3G connections because I think that, and only that is what is preventing this from being a great product.

Works ok, even when driving -- but beware: the audio doesn't come out of the dock connector, only the speaker/headphone jack. Wonder if this is an issue with the SDK?
