Flixwagon offers streaming video service for iPhone 3G

Not to be outdone by Qik, Flixwagon started offering their live streaming client for the iPhone 3G/2G this week. Flixwagon offers streaming video over WiFi or over the cellular data connection. In addition, the application offers 12 frames-per-second video. The company claims that they have very fast signup right from the iPhone, and the ability to change titles/details while broadcasting.

The last time we mentioned Flixwagon, it was still in beta, but they have finally opened up the service to anyone who has a jailbroken iPhone with either Cydia or Installer 4. The application weighs in at only 98 KB. For more information about this video streaming service, visit the Flixwagon blog.

Anyone know if a developer has tried to submit a video recording app to the app store and the results? I figure something like that would sell like hotcakes, at least until Apple wises up and makes it standard issue.

As far as I know, the SDK only permits access to the camera for taking photos.

Also they have to build their own encoding engine before the video gets sent to their servers. With windows mobile and symbian these are already built in. So that is another thing Apple may, on top of the fact they won't allow video capture yet.

12 frames per second? That's not very good.

I don't know if it's better quality, but certainly a lot easier and more reliable than Qik. My test feeds appear on the Flixwagon site within seconds, and they are reasonably watchable, too.

So, is it better, in terms of quality than Qik?

- the resolution is lower (Qik defaults to 320*240, default here is 176*144, with an option for 236*176)
- there is no live chat support, again unlike Qik
- every time I look at a "live" video it buffers about 50% of the time
