What's the deal with Seinfeld doing ads for Microsoft?

Microsoft has set aside $300 million for an ad campaign featuring once-funny comedian Jerry Seinfeld in a series of advertisements targeting Apple. [Insert "master of his domain" joke here. -Ed.]

According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft will pay Seinfeld $10 million to appear in a series of ads for its "Windows, Not Walls" campaign that will feature Seinfeld and Bill Gates, Microsoft's chairman. According to AdWeek, other highly-relevant comics like Chris Rock and Will Ferrell may also appear in the ads.

Wired notes that Microsoft's "choice of Seinfeld was an effort to avoid pandering to the kids with 'a celebrity that was too hip.'" Mission accomplished.

It's unclear why the titan even has to advertise; its highly successful Windows Vista and Zune media player products have dominated the landscape for ... I'm sorry. I just can't type anymore. I'm laughing too hard.

The campaign is due to launch September 4, and will be produced by MDC Partners' Crispin Porter + Bogusky. The agency is responsible for such memorable hits as Burger King's "Subservient Chicken" and Miller Lite's "Man Laws," the latter with Burt Reynolds. Will his star ever stop rising?

Maybe Newman should make a cameo appearance in a Mac vs PC commercial. Might be worth a snicker or two.

Guys, please stop being so pompous and self righteous. I'm an avid mac fan, but reading these kinds of articles are just ridiculous, especially when the writer is completely unable to remain juxtaposed.

Face it, guys, Microsoft is a more successful company than Apple, by about $100 billion.

I'm unable to remain side by side with myself? Yes. That's absolutely true. I admit it.

It's filed in the humor category for a reason, you know.

I suppose Jerry is the cheap way out and it would cost a lot more to fix Vista.

It's weird that Gates will be appearing in the commercials, after the big deal made of him stepping down at MS. It sends a really mixed message, but moreover shows that he likely isn't letting go, which has been a mixed blessing for MS since he left the CEO spot.

That said, Gates does have a really good sense of humor about himself, and he might be pretty entertaining. Would it make me switch? Heh, not in infinity plus one years.

300 million on an ad campaign. I can't see them making anywhere near that much in profit due to having an ad campaign of this nature. Sounds like lose.

Sweet fancy Moses! Well, I guess they're going to appeal to the "get off my lawn" demographic. Remember Jerry's "flash-forward" scene where he was envisioning being an old man, in the same apartment with an elderly Kramer, and then impulsively proposed to Janeane Garofalo? This campaign might look kind of like two old guys trying to look hip. Hope not, though...Jerry has always been intrigued by advertising (he even mentioned opening an ad agency as one of his possible post-sitcome vocations). And let's not forget that George once sold PCs for Frank before Kramer went Incredible Hulk on them! Oh well...sometimes all you can say is SERENITY NOW

I'm typing this on my Mac right now. But this article comes across so annoyingly arrogant.
