AT&T prompting 3G owners to update
A few TUAW readers have reported receiving a text message from AT&T on their 3G iPhones. Specifically, it prompts users to upgrade to iPhone software 2.0.2."An important software update for iPhone 3G has been available on iTunes since this past Monday," the message reads. "To get it, simply sync your iPhone 3G with iTunes and click the 'Check for Update' button."
Thanks for nagging, AT&T. Since I own an original iPhone that's fully up to date, I haven't received the message. So, dear readers, have you been nagged by Auntie AT&T today?

I can dial, receive a call but I can't use the voicemail icon to hear my messages on my bluetooth. Just goes to speaker phone. Any suggestions other then buy the Iphone headset?

- Metro Richmond VA, iPhone gets 3G and works great every time I go there.
- NYC last week, iPhone gets 3G and sucks
- Washington DC and NOVA last three days (post software update) iPhone gets 3G but 80% of the time is RENDERED TOTALLY USELESS unless I turn off 3G. Like data won't load at all, or excruciatingly slowly, apps crash and freeze, email won't update even manually, constant resets required.
All this based on 2 people traveling together with iPhone 3Gs. Bottom line: phone works OK with 3G off, but in some 3G service areas switching 3G on renders the iPhone almost useless.

I just got 3G in my town, the 2.02 update just makes the switch smoother between Edge and 3G for phone calls. If you trying streaming from Pandora and you get pauses in streaming during network switching. Oh the iPhone has stopped locking up during the network switching. @dominicorourke all radio signals are shaped based on their antennas and frequency.

This is because the chip apple used is weak...however, AT&T deserves to be sued as well for misrepresentation of their network.
August 23 2008 at 5:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply2.0.2 screwed my phone up. It was completely fine on 2.0.1, but now reception sucks, apps wont open...
Apple should pay for this phone, it's practically unusable, the phone should be gratis for all the trouble I've had.. All the money I wasted on apps that no longer work. I've had to reset 2.0.2 twice already to make it usable again, and this is gonna be the third time!!!
I live in Brooklyn, NY and work in Manhattan. When I first got my 3g iphone, 3G worked pretty good. Then a week or so later I noticed that it wasn't working so well. I did the 2 updates when they came out and still got pretty spotty 3G service. I finally decided to call ATT. I spent about 2 hours on the phone with them, finally getting to "Tier 2 Support". We went through resetting network, etc. Then she said, "oh... the NYC metro area has had a "massive" (actually word) 3G outage since August 9th". This seems to coincide with my service all of sudden getting spotty a week after I got the phone. Since my call earlier this week, I've noticed I'm getting 3G service a little bit better, so maybe they are really figuring things out on the network end of it.
-Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
Mh... No Problems with 3G-Coverage here in Germany... Maybe former state-owned enterprise Telekom/T-Mobile formerly known as Bundspost isn't that bad at all ;)
August 23 2008 at 2:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat is so upsetting about receiving a free text message to inform about an update that might have been applied? It's not as if cell towers are monitoring your software and send you targeted update notifications. I would be upset if they did.

Is the 3G signal shaped? All the phone masts in the area are on buildings about four or five stories tall. The building itselfbis a cocrete slab structure with big metal fins as sun screens all down the south facade. My 2 & 2.5 G coverage is good on those floors as the owners fitted masts in the lift shafts recently.
