Waiting on Spore and the App Store approval process

Update: The wait is over! As of 3:00 PM Eastern, the iPod touch/iPhone version of Spore Origins is available (with exclusive features) for $9.99US [App Store link].

Spore Origins for the iPhone does exist. We've seen it. However, as of this writing, it still hasn't spawned in the App Store.

Several months ago, it was announced that an iPhone companion would be released on the same date as the desktop version. An iPod version is available (in fact it preceded the full version of Spore), but iPhone users are still waiting to evolve. What gives?

Granted, it's not even 24 hours late, but we've heard stories of Apple taking their sweet time in approving App Store applications. One developer even told us of receiving notification that their application was available hours before it actually showed up in the store.

Of course, we cannot confirm the reason for Spore's tardiness. We will keep our eyes peeled for it, and let you know when it arrives.

The game itself is a scaled-down, limited-feature version of the Mac and PC counterpart. I've been playing it for a couple of hours and there's a few things I like, and a few I don't.

It's taken me some getting-used-to to really use the accelerometer. I feel like I'm holding the iPhone way above my head a lot, then in front of me but tilted aaaallllllllll the way forward, then I'm diving to my right... but I guess that's to be expected. If it was too sensitive (*cough*monkeyball*cough*) then it wouldn't be any fun. Once you get over that aspect of controlling the Spore, the only other thing you have to worry about is stringing along combos of smaller creatures and getting your creation big enough to pass the level. (I say "worry" here because the darn Spore moves so fast in later levels that you sometimes don't realize that it's a Baddie you're linking into your combos and not food.)

You can also manuever the Spore through certain "maze-levels", which have specific beginning and end points. Passing the maze levels generally gives you an evolution point, which can be used to upgrade the Spore in various ways - pinchers, mandibles, a "radar" from antennae that points you toward food - I'm not even half-way through the game, but the customization options seem pretty fleshed-out for a handheld spin-off.

If you're looking for something entertaining and not too frustrating, or something to play on the train home, I'd definitely recommend buying it.
Just don't expect a handheld port of the PC/Mac Spore, because this is nowhere near as grand. In my opinion though, $9.99 is a completely reasonable price for a game this polished.

Spore Origins is now also available in the UK store (for some reason it was not available at the same time as the US store).

It kinda sucks though that you can't export your creature to the desktop version...

And as for the fart app and other crap -- I still don't really understand the criteria for apps being allowed to the App Store...!?! Is this here of any more use than the (admittedly stupid) 'Pull my finger' app...?!

@Jens
Thanks for the heads up if thats the case I will just wait till after crhistmas to buy it either way I am not going to make a large 2,000$ investment to have it outdated in one day!

@Jim you will not be able to find it in either itunes or the ap store th only way of getting spore right now is clicking this link http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=290183295&mt=8 either from your iphone/ipod touch's web browser or clicking the link on your pc or mac. it will then open either the app store or itunes so you can futher purcahse spore, which by the way is pritty awesome; been playing for a while now getting the hang of it and really liking it!!!

Can't find it in the App Store on the iPhone. Can you only get it if you buy it on iTunes on your computer and then SYNC it to your phone?

Hi Theo,

I don't think we will see an iMac update before christmas. Apple is now revamping its iPod line for the christmas season and new Macs probably won't show up untill Macworld in January.

You never know in advance with Apple, but I work at a large Apple Premium Reseller in Amsterdam and this has pretty much been the case year after year.
