IT Pros, System Administrators, Webmasters: what's on your iPhone?

Brian Stucki over at Macminicolo has compiled a list of seven iPhone applications he uses regularly as an IT guy. It's a great start to putting together your own server-wrangling kit on your iPhone.

Brian includes Network Ping Lite (Free [iTunes]), Web Tools ($1.99USD [iTunes]), and iSSH ($4.99 [iTunes]), among others. He also somewhat reluctantly admits to frequently using the infamous (and now technically unavailable) tethering app, Netshare. We'd like to add a few applications to the list, and I'd love to hear about any additions from your own arsenal in the comments. Our top picks include a few iPhone apps, some of which are alternatives to entries in Brian's list and some which are additions:

  • FTP On The Go ($9.99USD [iTunes]), because sometimes you need to get in there and your iPhone is your only choice ...
  • TouchTerm ($2.99USD [iTunes]), another good terminal emulator with SSH
  • 1Password (Free [iTunes]), keep track of all of those server passwords
  • SleepOver ($2.99USD [iTunes]), another Wake-On-LAN utility which comes out a little cheaper than iWOL (mentioned in Brian's list)

A few web apps should also make the list, such as Inco (TUAW coverage), Webmin and iNagios, all of which are free and can be set up to allow server monitoring and/or administration from your iPhone. Take a look at Brian's list, have a peek at our additions, and then fill us in on what you're using on your iPhone to keep your server(s) up and your IT fires under control.

Have to admit, activesync is making my admin life easier.

May sound odd, or the unexpected answer, but as an admin I am on the move, or have my back turned to my main outlook work machine so often I have spaced many a con calls/meetings.

Sadly it is still an Exchange based world for many of us at work and this has been a very helpful addition.

Cheers

None. Can't justify spending over $2000 in the span of two years. For that kind of money I can buy a Macbook and still have enough for my current cell plan.

I have iSSH, which is a bit more expensive, but amazing. I had SSH, I want a refund on that one, it is absolute crap. I wish you could actually test the soft, but well, I am person number e^100000 saying that.
What I HATE about the store, is that a lot of vendors are only selling in the US, so I loose valuable software (since I am in Argentina and you can only buy from the country your phone is at).

I've got Mocha VNC on my iPhone, but I much preferred Touchpad Pro on pre-2.0 jailbreak.

For web apps, I've got Media Temple's account center bookmarked, and I'm looking forward to installing Mint on my servers, along with the iPhone pepper.

Hi,

my top 7 iPhone apps:
1) OmniFocus - I'm such a GTD whore...
2) Pennies - to stop me from buying to much Apple stuff =)
3) iShape - most IT guys I know should get that one =)
4) NetNewsWire - something to do while at the coffee break
5) iPod - turn off all those nasty office noises (like from co-workers bugging you about their problems *g*)
6) Air Sharing - easily carry work around with you
7) TouchTerm - I rarely use it. But the mere fact of having it installed comforts me =)

How is there no CIDR Calculator for the iPhone yet. a.k.a. Subnet Calc.

This is a very useful tool for any systems admin.

I have Mocha RDP on my 3g iphone which has allowed me to administer our servers over our windows VPN, which saved me from having to drive to the office or find a PC....
