FlyCast goes native on iPhone
Way back in the dark days of May, 2008, I posted about the FlyTunes.fm web app, which provides about 375 channels of streaming music pleasure to your iPhone or iPod touch. Thanks to the Large Hadron Collider, we've all been accelerated to the future and September, 2008, where there is a native app for your iPhone. FlyCast Mobile (yeah, they changed their name, too) gives you over a thousand digital channels, including music, talk radio, traffic, sports, news, and weather. You can pause all stations, skip songs on webcasts, and even use StreamAhead to listen to a station when you don't have a connection. Shoutcast fans will love FlyCast, as it can play any of over 25,000 stations in the Shoutcast directory.
The app is free and is available in the iTunes App Store (click opens iTunes).

Too bad its ugly as sin, Who uses neon green on black anymore? This isn't Mr. Wizard folks. Get with the times.
All joking aside, I liked the web-app, I guess ill give this a shot.

Ugly has no place on my iPhone, no matter how useful the application may be. The bar is raised, people... rise to the occasion. (see taptaptap.com for examples)

Will it allow you to manually enter a shoutcast feed (and/or is there another iPhone app that will do that)?

Yes, you can listen to any shoutcast station. Just use the search feature. The last option is to search shoutcast; just type in the channel you're looking for.

What about shoutcasts that are not listed? can I just type in my buddy's web address to his listen.pls file?

Does anyone know if this app alerts you when a call is coming in? I have the AOL Radio app and if you call me when I'm listening, I miss the call and it goes to VM. I have kids so I always need to get my calls? Any word? Thanks!

RWC, are you using the AOL app over EDGE? The original iPhone can't receive calls while there is an EDGE data connection open. I thought the 3G was supposed to fix that.
pauley2483, I've been using Nullriver's tuner app to play shoutcast streams and it works well. I do wish I could make it use a larger buffer though.

I haven't tried FlyCast yet (it's on my list of things to do) but I do know that Tuner lets you input custom streams, including passworded premium streams ala DI/Sky.

And that was meant to go under comment #3; sometimes I really hate AOL's blog software.

Tuner is a really cool program, but they need to update it. There is a lot more stuff they could be doing, like tagging music for purchase later, and better station bookmark organization. I have like 60 stations saved in bookmarks (God forbid I ever have to reinstall the app and reprogram them all), and I really want a way to organize them into different genres. I e-mailed the Nullriver, or whomever makes it, and suggested a bunch of stuff, but I haven't heard back yet.

This app should never have been approved, it implements functionality already present in iTunes. ;-)
LOL, just kidding. Hoping someone at Apple responds in some way to this vis-a-vis the Podcaster bulls**t.
