Apple updates Remote app for iPhone, adds Genius functionality
Apple just dropped an update for the Remote application for iPhone/iPod touch. Remote.app allows you to control any iTunes library (or Apple TV) over a local WiFi connection. According to the release notes, you will now be able to create a Genius playlist, and create/edit playlists in iTunes. This application (and its update) is a free download from the iTunes App Store. Take a look at our gallery of screenshots below. And be sure to sound off in the comments if you notice anything different in this version!

Also, you can now switch airtunes speakers directly from the 'now playing' screen.
Great update, still one of the best apps out there.

Apple tv should be getting an update anytime soon I guess. Having the genius functionality on apple tv would be awesome. Apple well done...This is why apple wins over microsoft hands down. While microsoft products turn into rubbish over time... Apple products get better and faster and more awesome.

Excuse me, but have you seen the zune? Compare it to the iPod classic: It DOES have a similar feature to genius that was announced a day before Apple did. Plus, all previous zunes get it as well, unlike apple were if you have an older iPod, your screwed. So in actuality, microsoft is improving and Apple is not.

People keep bringing that up, but Apple did the same thing by allowing all iPhone 2G users a free upgrade to the "3G" software, something they certainly did not have to do. Do you see MS upgrading all their WinMo phones to the new version free?
Plus, you also have to realize this, the older iPods are older because they can't support the new software. The Zunes are basically the same inside since day one, that allows them to do that. Yes, lets release the newest iPod software for the 1G iPod, I am sure it will run wonderfully.

Haven't had a chance to try this yet but based on the list it sounds like it still works only with iTunes or ATV and not FrontRow. If that's the case, I have to wonder why we couldn't get an update to that feature first - that's definitely higher-priority on my list than Genius.
Of course if they added FrontRow capability too then I'll just shut up now....

Damn ... no genius for Apple TV. I'm guessing that will come with a software update? I'm actually getting quite used to setting a genius playlist during my morning commute and I really wish it'd be integrated into all my products already!

To stream/listen to music on your iPhone, you can either use SimplifyMedia or RemoteBuddy.

I figured out something really cool about the Remote app (maybe most already know this)....
All you need to run this app is a WI-FI signal....not a wireless internet signal.
For example: I DJ parties, etc. using iTunes and Djay, and can easily use my iPhone to control these programs while using the Remote app ---- even when there is no actual internet signal. For example: all I need to do is take along my wireless router and power it up so my computer and iPhone can link together --- even if the event doesn't have internet enabled Wi-Fi.
All it needs is the Wi-Fi signal itself.
try it out!

ARGH.
Stupid 1password auto-fill thing.
(Or, rather, stupid me for not setting it up right).

You don't even need to bring a wireless router, you can use ur mac to create a wireless network with 2 clicks.
Ted said 8:09PM on 9-17-2008
lol, dumbass has been bringing his router with him. That's cute.
richard said 9:39PM on 9-16-2008
You don't even need the router - you can set up an ad-hoc network from your pc, then connect to it with your iPhone and voila remote will work!
I did this on holiday!
