A quick shot of Espresso for web designers
Word is out ... there's a new contender for the do-it-all web design and development title belt. Espresso has been announced by the creators of CSSEdit, and it looks like major competition for a TUAW favorite, Coda.
Espresso looks like it's going to be a solid editing platform, with an advanced XHTML editor (with spell checking in non-code contexts), live preview (even for database driven applications), advanced search with regular expressions, tabbed interface and sidebar tools and, of course, the things we love about CSSEdit throughout the interface. Espresso will ship with support for HTML, XML, CSS and JavaScript, but here's the really impressive part: it -- not unlike TextMate -- is going to be very extensible. Using XML-based "Sugars," you can add new languages, CodeSense support and more. An SDK will be available for those who wish to earn the title "Sugar Daddy."
I'm looking forward to this release with great anticipation, and the chatter around TUAW indicates I'm not alone. You can sign up for updates on the Espresso page at MacRabbit.

I don't like their icon. It looks too much like Sun's Java logo mark.

Looks like exactly what I've been searching for. I'm anticipating this launch like no other, haha.

Oh my. I don't know how I lived before CSSEdit (accept no substitutes), and this looks at least 68.3% more awesome.

65% of all statistics are made up. But I agree with Hawkman, CSSEdit is the best thing ever. I barely use Dreamweaver anymore for CSS. Oh wait, I never use it! I am excited to see how this html editor weaves in with CCSEdit. I almost have no reason for Adobe these days!

Dreamweaver?! Just say no. It's a crap app, with little in touch for quality work.

There is one thing missing from these nice devlopment environments - debugging. The only way to debug PHP in a decent environment is to use Eclipse. Surely this would send the sales through the roof because as good as I am, I don't always get it right first time and need to debug my code.

I not unlike your review of Espresso. ;)
And what's with the (html title attribute) advertising on the Coda link? Knock it off!

Wow. Panic tried to license CSSEdit for use in their Coda product. MacRabbit declined and now I think we know why.
Coda is a fabulous product and some competition is going to make it even better. I think it is great that we are seeing a proliferation of great web design apps for the Mac. Both Panic and MacRabbit are top quality Mac developers who know how to make beautiful native software. They both won Apple Design Awards at last years WWDC. So this is shaping up to be a battle of the coding giants. The winner is everybody.

I use Coda and I think it is great for my needs. I tried CSSEdit and it looked amazing. I made a choice to go with Coda since it did so much more. That being said, if Espresso can do what Coda does and have the killer features of CSSEdit, I may end up switching.
