Found Footage: iPhone app monitors your heart rate
A new iPhone application, currently awaiting approval from Apple, will monitor your heart rate via the built-in microphone (through either the onboard mic on the iPhone or through the mic/headset combo). The developer has released the above video demonstration.
In addition to monitoring your heart rate using the microphone, you can also count your bpm (beats per minute) using the voice prompts. The application then stores your heart rate for later reference. We can't wait to see this application hit the app store!
Thanks, John!

I think this app should be denied on the grounds that it duplicates the functionality of my forefinger, the artery in my wrist, and my innate ability to count. The app may therefore lead to user cardiac confusion.

I suspect that Apple have some sort of rule against apps which could present the iPhone as a medical diagnostic device, full stop. It'd be a borderline example of one and I doubt that the FDA would actually get involved, but the possibility is there.

It's so amazing what the iPhone can do!
The devs who develop these great applications are showing how far ahead the iPhone is, still to this day.
Take that sprint!

The iPhone is becoming the TRICORDER we all marveled at in Star Trek. Now someone needs to figure out how to use the camera or one of the proximity sensors to monitor blood oxygen levels etc. I wonder if they can mod the app to use the mic in a bluetooth headset... for wireless monitoring.

"Heartbeat" does the same thing, manually by tapping screen tho.

Yeah, but try tapping your iphone screen while running on a treadmill. Good luck with that.
This app however looks like a perfect solution for staying in your fat burning zone wile doing cardio and not looking like an idiot in the gym.

That's a great app.
Totally useless for me... but for people who need to monitor their heart rate often, it must be great!
Can't wait to get my Touch and get my hands on all these great apps!

My.... God.....
Someone needs to teach all these f'ing app developers how to create a demo video. I've seen so many demos just like this with a boring monotone voice and a 1st person camera angle, then they drone on and on for 2 minutes before showing us what the app actually does. GET TO THE GOOD PART, then explain how it works.
