NetNewsWire was one of the first native applications on the iPhone to read RSS feeds. Today, NewsGator
released some astounding statistics about their application and users. One of the announcements was that NNW on the iPhone has over 200,000 users. Some of the other interesting stats they're talking about are:
- 115,000 users have signed up for the iPhone version in the past 30-days
- Average NNW for iPhone users subscribe to 26 feeds (I subscribe to over 115 -- just sayin')
- One NNW for iPhone user subscribes to over 2,800 feeds (and how does this person read all of the newsies coming over the wire?)
NetNewsWire is a free application for the iPhone that can be downloaded from the
iTunes App Store (iTunes link). You can celebrate with the NewsGator folks on
their blog. Be sure to take part in our poll to find out how many RSS feeds you subscribe to.

Great! Now if they only actually added some useful features to the app like marking unread, or adding a flag/star I would actually have more than 5 feeds!!

Adding a flag/star would be good -- that, and being able to view your clippings.

Yeah I'd second flagging. There are some news stories I want to read on a real browser, or in flash so I'd like to flag them instead of trying to remember them.

I have been using NetnewsWire since it launched. I was using the web interface on my computer. And also used the iPhone app extensively. Its a great service.

Whats the best way to read my Google Reader on the iphone/touch? I dont like the safari interface, and I already have my feeds set up and in use on Google Reader, so I would like them to show up read at my computer if I read them on the touch. Thanks!

I'd like the same, I wish someone would make an iPhone app that would link to Google Reader...

Byline works with Google Reader and allows you to save marked web pages for viewing offline. Highly recommended.
The only negative is that it combines all the feeds into one. But the author says that hes working on a 'folder' system to separate the feeds inside the app.

It might just be me but this app is extremely slow and crashes so much that I don't even use it. I have kept up with the updates but still crashes constantly. I have about 50 feeds though I can probably weed out some of the ones I never read.

Too bad their native app is horrible on the iPhone. I've switched back to their web app. It's sooooo much faster and it doesn't crash

@ Ed and @ DC:
The Mobile Safari-web based Google Reader is leaps & bounds better than the NNW (IMHO). It was redesigned a few months ago, and is pretty slick. You can star items, email items, choose to view originals in condensed format/regular web page format, etc.
On your iPhone/iPod touch, surf to:
http://www.google.com/reader/i
Log in, and enjoy. There's no need for an app to point to GR, the web app works just like an app.

General NNW question:
I have only 5 feeds but when a feed gets to 20 new stories, NNW stops receiving new stories for that feed. Is there a way to make it so there is no limit?

Well, I like the iPhone NNW.
There are clippings for viewing your items later on another computer, you can easily email links to feed items, you can choose to keep or not to keep unread items and for how long. You can also view news items in a Safari (webkit?) rendered page inside the app and return to the feed list to continue where you left off without needing to launch Safari and exit. The most important feature is the sync with NNW service though.
Yeah, I would like some features like customizing the arrangement of the feed list and sometimes the sync takes a while to realize items have been read... But I use it every day (twice a day, at least 1h in total) and I'm happy.
