BGR: Walmart to carry iPhone 3G for Black Friday

The Boy Genius Report claims that they received a report saying Walmart may become the second independent retailer in the U.S. to carry the iPhone.

The big box retailer is expected to begin selling the iPhone about two weeks before Black Friday, on November 15. Walmart already carries a range of cases and accessories for iPhones, and sells a variety of iPods.

Radio Shack was also rumored to carry the handset, but its unclear if negotiations stalled, or the news about Walmart is just stealing its thunder, as BGR speculates.

Best Buy already carries the iPhone 3G, which you must activate before leaving the store. It stands to reason that Walmart will employ a similar process.

Yessir :)

More Apple Market Share means, in fact, MORE people in MORE places...

Such a dichotomy! How can one be a snooty elitist when their weapon of choice is at Walmart, an American-run front for Chinese Retail Junk? :)

Life is sweet :)

I'm so glad that the iPhone is not cool any more! I bought one because it's the best device available with the features I want, not because I wanted to be "the pretentious, hipster douche bag that contantely pulls his iPhone out because he is so important"

There's really no reason not to sell the iPhone 3G at Walmart. There's a store almost everywhere, their return policies are awesome, and they typically do drive down prices a little.

@Jeff, I hope that the 3G is returning back to home activation. Those AT&T store reps are a PIA about the iPhone 3G and accessories. I went into buy a replacement headset on one occasion and a screen guard on another and both times they insisted on looking up my account information just for accessories. It's obvious what they're doing - making sure you use the iPhone on their networks. I'm on AT&T, so no problems here, but that kind of checking is a bit extreme.

There are rumors that the iPhone 3G is being changed to home activation. That would certainly explain the Wal-Mart issue.

Could this be the pre-paid plan that AT&T promised at some unspecified time when the 3G was announced - pick up the phone and a pre-paid card at Walmart, activate it and add the minuted at home?

Walmart blows. It's pretty much the opposite business plan to Apple. Sell cheap crap in terrible lighting conditions at the lowest possible price to people that couldn't care less about aesthetics.

I cannot imagine having to 1) find a Wal-Mart employee to activate my phone on Black or any other Friday, 2) wait for said employee to figure out how to activate my new phone, and 3) having to explain to the employee how the phone works.
