2009 World Wide Newton Conference announced

It's almost time for the annual tech event we all know and love. Not Macworld Expo, the World Wide Newton Conference! Started in 2004, the WWNC is a gathering of the most vocal and prolific members of the Newton Community. Projects that have come out of the WWNC include Einstein, a Newton OS emulator for Linux-based PDAs, and Newton WaveLAN drivers.

For now, the website has launched and a call for participants has been issued. If you're interested in attending or presenting, you can contact the folks in charge at the official website. WWNC '09 will take place from July 31st - August 2nd in Vancouver, BC, Canada. If you attend, please let us know. Have fun!

Would love to know more details, the link on this post doesn't work. I'd be interested in attending.

I wish I could use my Newton keyboard with my iPod touch.

I suggest that the best way to honour the delight that was (ok, is) the Newton would be to work on iphone apps/extensions/whatever to provide Newton functionality. That way the good stuff is both preserved and promulgated.

I wish I was cool enough to use a Newton.

I went to the first WWNC in Paris, and it was a great event.

vandil: I already have an iPhone. Got it the day of release. Can you print from your iPhone? Can you beam a contact? What about notes...can you read your iPhone's notes on your Mac? What was that, no notes sync, Apple forgot about that?

My messagepad 2100 has a screen more than twice as big as my iPhone. Because it uses a pen, it's a lot easier to draw on it compared to the iPhone.

The iPhone is only slightly a replacement for the Newton. The Newton still does a lot of stuff that the iPhone can't do. The Newton does things the iPhone doesn't *try* to do. A tablet iPhone would be a serious competitor to the Newton.

Don't, of course, get the mistaken impression that I'm claiming the Newton is better in every way than the iPhone, or that there aren't serious issues with the Newton. Newton is not a practical platform for most people nowadays. It's like a classic car in many ways.

gopi- nice comparison of a newton to a classic car, I totally agree. I love my newtons and emate! There is just something about the NewtonOS that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside that palms and iphones (although more modern) don't give me. It must be those awesome NewtonOS interface sounds! and Vandil- I currently have an iphone (from day 1 of 1st gen release).

You mean they haven't jumped on a iPod Touch or iPhone... seriously I wonder how those little things are still running.

With all due respect to the Newton enthusiasts out there: Get an iPhone or iPod Touch already.
